The Ryden Road Clipless Pedals are lightweight performance pedals for road cycling, endurance riding, sportives, fitness training and racing. A wide road-specific platform spreads pedaling pressure across more of the shoe sole, a secure 3-bolt cleat interface holds your foot in the same place through every pedal stroke, and adjustable release tension lets you set how much force it takes to clip out. A reinforced composite body keeps weight low, a chromoly-steel spindle handles sustained high-cadence and high-torque riding, and a sealed cartridge bearing keeps rotation smooth in changing weather. Each pair comes with Ryden Road Cleats in the float you choose, so you can move from flat pedals to a dedicated road clipless system without ordering cleats separately.

The same foot position every pedal stroke: a wide road platform, adjustable release tension, cleats in the box

WidePower Road Platform

A broad supporting platform around the cleat interface spreads pedaling pressure across more of the shoe sole, for stable, direct power transfer under load.

3-Bolt Road Cleats Included

Every pair comes with Ryden Road Cleats in the float you choose (0° Fixed, 4.5° Standard or 9° Maximum float), mounted with the 3-bolt pattern of dedicated road shoes.

Adjustable Release Tension

Set a light release while you learn to clip in and out, or firmer retention for sprinting, climbing and racing.

Light, Low-Profile Build

A reinforced composite body keeps the pair at approx. 285–315 g excluding cleats and hardware, and a low stack height holds your shoe close to the pedal axle.

Chromoly Spindle, Sealed Bearing

A high-strength chromoly-steel spindle turns on a sealed cartridge bearing with bushing support, for smooth rotation in changing weather.

The Ryden Road Clipless Pedals are designed for cyclists who want a more secure connection to the bike than a conventional platform pedal can give. A cleat bolted beneath the cycling shoe locks into the pedal’s retention mechanism, so instead of resting on top of the pedal, your foot is mechanically held to it.

That creates one continuous interface from rider to shoe, pedal, crankset and drivetrain, and it means the shoe returns to the same place every time it engages. On the road, where you pedal continuously for hours at a time, holding that position makes a real difference to comfort and control.

In practice, your foot can’t bounce off the pedal or slide around the platform when you spin fast, sprinting feels more stable under high power, and you stay connected through seated and standing climbs.

What clipping in doesn’t do is add power by itself. Clipless pedals improve foot security, consistency, stability and confidence; your performance still depends on fitness, technique, position, cadence and bike setup.

Ryden WidePower road platform

A road pedal is built around a particular set of priorities:

  • •Low weight
  • •A large shoe contact area
  • •Low stack height
  • •Stable power transfer

The WidePower platform surrounds the cleat interface with a broad supporting surface. The larger contact area spreads pedaling pressure across more of the shoe sole, which can give:

  • •Better stability under load
  • •Less localized pressure
  • •A more direct pedaling feel
  • •More confidence during hard efforts

3-bolt road cleat interface

The pedals engage Ryden Road Cleats, which attach beneath the shoe with three bolts arranged in a triangle: the mounting format used on dedicated road cycling shoes. It gives:

  • •A large attachment area
  • •Stable cleat positioning
  • •Road-specific shoe compatibility
  • •Secure pedal engagement

Single-sided engagement

The pedals are single-sided, with dedicated left and right pedals, and you release by rotating your heel outward. See Cleats & setup for float, release tension and cleat installation.

Low-profile pedal design

Stack height is the distance between the sole of your shoe and the pedal spindle. The compact body keeps it short, so your shoe sits closer to the axle, there is less unwanted movement between shoe and pedal, and force reaches the crank more directly.

Reinforced composite body

The main pedal body is a fiber-reinforced engineering composite, which balances:

  • •Weight
  • •Rigidity
  • •Impact resistance
  • •Corrosion resistance

Composite construction also allows reinforcement ribs and support structures to be molded directly into the pedal body.

Chromoly-steel spindle

The spindle carries the load between the crank arm and the pedal body. It has to withstand rider weight, repeated pedaling loads, sprint forces, climbing torque and high-cadence fatigue cycles, so the pedals use a high-strength chromoly-steel spindle with the standard 9/16" × 20 TPI pedal thread.

Sealed bearing system

The spindle turns on a sealed cartridge bearing with low-friction bushing support. The result:

  • •Smooth rotation
  • •Reduced maintenance
  • •Better contamination resistance
  • •Predictable long-term operation

The pedals are designed for normal wet-weather riding but aren’t waterproof: don’t submerge or pressure-wash them.

Weight

Approx. 285–315 g per pair, excluding cleats and mounting hardware.

Q: What are the Ryden Road Clipless Pedals designed for?

A (Ryden team): Road cycling, endurance riding, racing, sportives, fitness training and triathlon.

Asked by Ryden team, 0 helpful votes
What cleats are included?+

One pair of Ryden Road Cleats in the float you choose when ordering: 0° Fixed, 4.5° Standard (the default) or 9° Maximum float, with 6 cleat bolts and 6 washers.

What mounting pattern do the cleats use?+

The standard 3-bolt road cleat pattern.

Will they work with mountain-bike shoes?+

Not if the shoes only have a 2-bolt MTB cleat mount. You need shoes with a 3-bolt road cleat pattern.

Are the pedals double-sided?+

No. They’re single-sided road pedals.

What does 4.5° float mean?+

Your heel can rotate a moderate amount while the shoe stays clipped in.

Can I get zero-float cleats?+

Yes: choose 0° Fixed cleats when ordering, or buy Ryden Road Cleats in 0° Fixed separately.

Can I get more float?+

Yes: choose 9° Maximum float cleats when ordering, or buy Ryden Road Cleats in 9° Maximum float separately, for greater rotational movement.

Can I adjust how difficult it is to unclip?+

Yes. The spring retention tension is adjustable on the pedal.

What setting should beginners use?+

A relatively low release tension.

How do I unclip?+

Rotate your heel outward until the cleat releases from the pedal.

Should I unclip before stopping?+

Yes, especially while you’re learning: release one foot before the bike comes to a complete stop.

Are they suitable for racing?+

Yes. The WidePower platform and adjustable retention are designed for performance road riding.

Can I use them for long-distance cycling?+

Yes. They’re well suited to endurance road riding when your cleats are correctly fitted.

Are they suitable for commuting?+

They can be used for commuting, but flat pedals or a recessed-cleat system may be more practical if you stop or walk often.

Can I walk normally in the cleats?+

No. Road cleats protrude beneath the shoe, so walking is less natural than with recessed MTB cleats, and it wears the cleats faster.

Do the cleats wear out?+

Yes. Road cleats are consumable parts: replace them with Ryden Road Cleats when they’re significantly worn.

How much do the pedals weigh?+

Approx. 285–315 g per pair, excluding cleats.

What thread size do they use?+

The standard 9/16" × 20 TPI pedal thread.

Will they fit carbon cranksets?+

Yes, in general, if the crank has the standard 9/16" × 20 TPI pedal thread. Follow the crank manufacturer’s installation instructions, including any pedal washer they specify, and their torque specification.

Are the bearings sealed?+

Yes. A sealed cartridge bearing with bushing support is designed for normal all-weather road riding.

Can I ride them in rain?+

Yes. They’re designed for normal wet-weather road riding, but they aren’t waterproof, so don’t submerge them.

Can I pressure wash the pedals?+

No. Don’t aim high-pressure water at the bearings or retention mechanism: clean them with mild soap, water and a soft brush.

How often should I check my cleat bolts?+

Regularly, especially after first installation and when you’re riding often.

Why is my shoe difficult to release?+

Common causes are release tension set too high, incorrect cleat installation, a damaged cleat, debris in the mechanism, or excessive cleat wear.

Why does my shoe feel loose when clipped in?+

Common causes are loose cleat bolts, worn cleats, low spring tension, worn retention components, or the wrong cleat: the pedals take only Ryden Road Cleats. Heel rotation within your cleats’ float is normal.

Should both pedals have the same spring tension?+

Normally yes: matching settings give consistent release.

Can beginners use these pedals?+

Yes, as long as they practice clipping in and releasing in a safe place before riding on public roads.

Are they suitable for gravel riding?+

On smoother gravel routes, yes. For technical terrain and frequent walking, an MTB-style (2-bolt) clipless pedal is generally more practical.

Can I use these pedals indoors on a trainer?+

Yes: on a bike on a trainer, or an indoor bike, whose cranks have the standard 9/16" × 20 TPI pedal thread. Some exercise bikes use a smaller 1/2" thread, which these pedals don’t fit.

Do clipless pedals improve pedaling efficiency?+

Not automatically. They mainly improve foot security, consistency and control; any efficiency gain depends heavily on your technique and fit.

Should I professionally fit my cleats?+

If you have knee, ankle or foot discomfort, yes: a professional cleat setup or bike fit is recommended.

Can I reuse old cleat bolts?+

Only if they’re compatible, undamaged and free of significant corrosion.

What happens if the cleat is mounted at the wrong angle?+

Incorrect rotation can force your foot into an unnatural position and may cause discomfort.

Can the pedal mechanism be serviced?+

Inspect the pedals regularly, and contact us about servicing if the bearings or retention parts are worn. Severely worn retention components should be replaced.
