Choosing a rear derailleur

Match your drivetrain speed

Choose the derailleur for your number of rear sprockets: 7/8-, 9-, 10-, 11- or 12-speed. Then match the shifter too, because derailleurs and shifters of the same speed don’t always pull the same amount of cable.

Check your largest cog

Every cage has a maximum rear sprocket, from 28T on the shortest cages to 52T on the 12-speed MTB derailleur. Your cassette’s largest cog must be within it.

Check the total capacity

Capacity = (largest chainring − smallest chainring) + (largest cog − smallest cog). A 42/32/22T triple with an 11–34T cassette needs 20 + 23 = 43T. Longer cages absorb more chain, so 2× and 3× drivetrains usually need a long cage.

Check the hanger first

A bent derailleur hanger is one of the most common causes of poor rear shifting. Check its alignment before replacing a derailleur, and before fine-tuning a new one.

Frequently asked questions

Which rear derailleur do I need?+

Start with your drivetrain speed, then your cassette’s largest cog and the total capacity of your chainrings and cassette. Road bikes usually suit a short or medium cage, 1× mountain bikes a long cage, and 2× or 3× touring bikes the high-capacity Long-Cage Touring Derailleur.

What is total capacity?+

The amount of chain a derailleur can take up: (largest chainring − smallest chainring) + (largest cog − smallest cog). Your drivetrain’s figure must be within the derailleur’s capacity, as well as its largest cog within the maximum sprocket.

Short, medium or long cage?+

A short cage is lighter with more ground clearance, for close-ratio cassettes and 1× setups. Medium suits moderate ranges and many 2× setups. A long cage takes the largest cogs and the most capacity, for wide-range 1×, 2× and 3× drivetrains.

Do I need a clutch derailleur?+

For rough off-road riding, a clutch reduces chain slap and helps keep the chain on. Ryden’s clutch options are the 11-speed MTB TrailLock version and the 12-speed MTB derailleur. City, road and touring bikes generally don’t need one.

What warranty do Ryden rear derailleurs have?+

A 1-year limited warranty against manufacturing defects, as for all Ryden drivetrain components. Wear from use, such as worn pulley wheels, is not covered.
