Everyday grip. Everyday durability. No special shoes required.

Wide Urban Platform

A generously sized platform, approx. 105 × 95 mm, gives everyday footwear more surface area to rest on, improving stability and reducing pressure concentration under your foot on commutes and recreational rides.

Reinforced Composite Body

A tough engineering-grade composite provides useful impact resistance while keeping weight lower than many traditional all-steel platform pedals.

Multi-Surface Traction

Raised perimeter features, textured contact areas, and molded traction points help limit unwanted shoe movement when you accelerate, brake, corner, or ride over rough pavement.

Chromoly Spindle, Smooth Bearings

A strong chromoly-steel axle, built for the repeated loads of daily riding, turns on a sealed bearing and low-friction bushing that help shield the internals from everyday dirt, moisture, and road contamination.

Integrated Reflectors

Front and rear reflectors make the pedals more visible when vehicle headlights and other light sources shine on them.

City pedals have a different job from aggressive mountain-bike platforms or performance clipless pedals. Most urban riders wear sneakers, casual shoes, work shoes, or other everyday footwear rather than dedicated cycling shoes, so platform size, predictable grip, comfort, durability, and ease of use matter more than aggressive metal pins or complicated engagement mechanisms. The Ryden Urban Flat Pedals are designed around those requirements.

Their broad platform supports more of your shoe than a narrow traditional pedal. That gives your foot a more stable base and can make stop-and-go riding more comfortable, particularly when you’re repeatedly pulling away from traffic lights, intersections, and congested streets.

The composite body builds traction into the platform itself rather than relying only on sharp replaceable pins, giving useful grip without making the pedal unnecessarily aggressive for everyday footwear.

The low-profile shape keeps your foot relatively close to the pedal axle. A thinner pedal can feel more connected, and it gives slightly more clearance than unusually thick platform designs.

Inside, the chromoly spindle turns on a combination of sealed bearing support and a low-friction bushing, balancing smooth rotation, durability, weight, and low routine maintenance.

For commuters, recreational riders, and everyday bicycles, the result is intentionally simple: step on, pedal, and ride. Simple shoes. Stable platform. Everyday miles.

Ryden UrbanGrip platform architecture

UrbanGrip is the platform design behind the Urban Flat Pedals: a broad, mildly concave composite platform that gives everyday shoes a stable, grippy base. It combines:

Broad foot contact
Approx. 105 × 95 mm of usable support for common casual and athletic footwear.
Slightly concave profile
The center of the platform sits subtly lower than the outer traction zones, so your shoe settles naturally into the pedal.
Molded traction points
Raised composite traction features add contact with the shoe outsole without sharp metal pins.
Textured center surface
Surface texture increases friction between pedal and shoe, especially during frequent urban starts and stops.
Open-body construction
Strategically placed openings remove unnecessary material and give water, dirt, and small debris a way to escape.
Rounded urban edges
The perimeter is shaped to balance grip with everyday practicality, without unnecessarily sharp external features.

Why a composite body?

Composite pedals are sometimes assumed to be simply a cheaper substitute for metal pedals. In fact, modern reinforced engineering composites offer useful advantages for urban riding:

Lower weight
A composite structure avoids some of the mass of traditional steel pedal cages.
Corrosion resistance
The platform itself doesn’t rust.
Impact tolerance
The body tolerates typical everyday knocks without permanently denting the way thin sheet-metal structures can.
Comfortable surface
Composite contact surfaces work well with everyday footwear and don’t feel excessively aggressive.
Design flexibility
Complex traction patterns, drainage openings, reflector mounts, and reinforcement ribs can be integrated into a composite platform structure.

For aggressive MTB use, aluminum can have advantages in some designs, but for everyday urban riding, reinforced composite gives an excellent balance of weight, durability, comfort, and cost.

Chromoly-steel spindle

The spindle carries essentially every pedaling load between you, the pedal, and the crank, so Ryden makes it from chromoly steel rather than from the same composite as the body. Chromoly steel provides:

  • •High strength
  • •Good fatigue resistance
  • •Resistance to bending
  • •Durable pedal threads
  • •Reliable long-term structural performance

Around this stronger central axle, the lighter composite body keeps the pedal’s overall weight down.

Sealed bearing and low-friction bushing

Each spindle turns on a sealed bearing, which keeps road dirt and moisture away from the internals, and a low-friction bushing that shares the load and keeps rotation smooth with little routine maintenance. The spindle and bearings allow basic servicing.

Integrated reflectors

Each pedal carries a front and a rear reflector, set into mounts molded into the composite body. They add visibility in vehicle headlights but don’t replace bike lights: see Reflector safety under Riding & use.

Asked by Ryden team, 0 helpful votes
What pedal thread do they use?+

The standard 9/16" × 20 TPI thread used by most modern adult bicycle cranksets.

Will they fit my bike?+

Yes, if your crankset uses the standard 9/16" pedal thread, as most adult cranksets do, including Ryden’s road, MTB, city/hybrid, and e-bike cranksets. Check your current pedals or crank specification if you’re unsure.

Are they sold individually or as a pair?+

As a pair: one left and one right pedal.

Which pedal goes on which side?+

The pedal marked R fits the right (drive) side, and the pedal marked L fits the left (non-drive) side.

Why does the left pedal thread backwards?+

Its reverse (left-hand) thread helps stop it loosening under normal pedaling forces. It tightens counterclockwise, viewed from outside the crank.

Do I need cycling shoes?+

No. The pedals are designed to work well with ordinary athletic and casual footwear.

Do the pedals have metal pins?+

No. They use molded composite traction features. If you need aggressive replaceable pins, choose a pinned MTB platform pedal.

Do they have reflectors?+

Yes: reflectors are integrated into the front and rear of each pedal.

Are they waterproof?+

No. They’re designed for normal wet-weather riding and have protected internal bearing components, but they’re not waterproof: don’t submerge them or aim high-pressure water at the spindle area.

Can I use them on an e-bike?+

Yes, if the e-bike’s cranks use the 9/16" pedal thread and you ride within the pedals’ intended use, such as e-city, e-hybrid, commuter, and trekking riding.

Can I use them on a mountain bike?+

Yes, for commuting, recreational riding, bike paths, and light trails. For technical MTB riding, choose an aggressively pinned platform pedal.

Will they fit a road bike?+

Yes: most modern road cranksets use the 9/16" pedal thread. They’re a good option if you prefer regular shoes to clipless road pedals.

Can they be used for touring?+

Yes. They suit touring riders who prefer comfortable flat pedals and everyday footwear.

Are the bearings sealed?+

Partly: the spindle turns on a sealed bearing plus a low-friction bushing, with protected internals designed to reduce contamination from normal road dirt and moisture. They’re not waterproof.

How large is the platform?+

Approx. 105 × 95 mm, giving everyday footwear broad support.

How much do the pedals weigh?+

Approx. 350–380 g per pair.

Should I grease the threads before installation?+

Yes: apply a thin coat of bicycle grease or suitable anti-seize compound to the spindle threads before installing the pedals.

How tight should the pedals be?+

Tighten them securely, following the crank manufacturer’s pedal torque specification where one is given.

Why won’t my pedal screw into the crank?+

Stop rather than forcing it. Possible causes are turning it the wrong way (the left pedal tightens counterclockwise), a pedal on the wrong side, cross-threading, the wrong thread size, damaged crank threads, or misalignment.

Will these fit a children’s bicycle?+

Only if the bike’s cranks use the 9/16" thread: some children’s bikes use a smaller 1/2" pedal thread. On the Ryden Kids Bike Crankset, the pedal thread depends on the version, so confirm yours with us.

Can the pedals be pressure washed?+

No. High-pressure water aimed at the spindle seals can force contamination into the bearing system. Clean them with mild soap, water, and a soft cloth or brush.

Are they suitable for riding in rain?+

Yes. They’re designed for normal wet-weather commuting and recreational riding. After heavy rain, wipe them down and let the bike dry.

How do I know when the pedals need servicing?+

Inspect them if you notice excessive play, rough rotation, grinding, clicking, binding, or damage to the pedal body.

Are they suitable for downhill or dirt jumping?+

No. For downhill, enduro, freeride, dirt-jump, or aggressive BMX riding, use a purpose-built pedal designed for those loads.
