Ryden Road Double Front Derailleur – Precision 2× Mechanical Road Shifting
The Ryden Road Double Front Derailleur is a precision mechanical front derailleur designed for compatible 2× road, endurance, fitness, and all-road drivetrains. Featuring a rigid forged-aluminum linkage, a stainless-steel chain guide, Ryden RoadShift Link geometry, and support for shifter trim positions, it is engineered to deliver smooth shifts between compact, semi-compact, and race-oriented road chainrings. The standard 11-speed braze-on version is optimized around 50/34T and 52/36T double cranksets, with further versions for 10-speed and selected 12-speed road systems, plus a 10/11-speed clamp version for frames without a braze-on tab.

Precise cage control, wear-resistant steel, smooth 2× road shifts
A stiff, controlled linkage converts cable movement into precise lateral cage movement for consistent 2× front shifts.
Designed around common road combinations such as 50/34T and 52/36T, both of which use a 16-tooth difference.
A wear-resistant inner cage surface withstands repeated chain contact while maintaining accurate shifting.
With a compatible trim-capable road shifter, trim positions reduce chain rub across a wider range of rear gears.
Braze-on versions bolt straight to a frame tab, while the 10/11-speed clamp version comes with a clamp adapter in your choice of 31.8 or 34.9 mm.
A front derailleur does a very different job from a rear derailleur. Its task isn’t simply to move the chain sideways: it has to guide a moving chain between two chainrings with significantly different diameters while you keep pedaling.
During an upshift from the smaller ring, the derailleur cage pushes the chain outward until the chainring’s pickup pins and shift ramps capture it and lift it onto the larger ring. During a downshift, the derailleur moves inward and lets the chain release from the large ring and settle onto the smaller one.
The Ryden Road Double Front Derailleur is designed to coordinate this movement with Ryden RoadShift 2X chainrings and cranksets. It has a rigid aluminum linkage and a shaped stainless-steel cage built around modern narrow road chains. Precise pivot placement controls how the cage moves relative to the chainrings, helping it keep appropriate clearance through the shift.
On a mechanical system, cable tension translates your input at the left shift lever into controlled cage movement. Fine adjustment lets the derailleur work with compact road gearing, semi-compact gearing, traditional race gearing, and multiple frame mounting formats.
The result is a mechanical 2× road front derailleur focused on precise cage control, wear resistance, and smooth shifting across compact, semi-compact, and race gearing.
Ryden RoadShift Link
RoadShift Link, Ryden’s road linkage geometry, is the derailleur’s core technology. It combines:
- Controlled lateral travel
- The pivot arrangement determines how far the cage moves for a given amount of cable pull.
- Curved outer cage
- The cage follows the circumference of the large chainring to maintain efficient chain control.
- Rigid pivot structure
- Reduced unwanted flex improves response during high-force upshifts.
- Fine-position adjustment
- Lets installers align the cage accurately relative to the chainrings.
- Trim-compatible movement
- Works with compatible road shifters that provide intermediate front-derailleur positions.
Cage construction
The derailleur uses a hybrid construction, with each part made from the material that suits its job:
- Outer plate
- Stainless steel, for stiffness and wear resistance.
- Inner plate
- Stainless steel with shaped chain-contact surfaces.
- Linkage
- Forged / CNC-machined aluminum, to reduce weight.
- Pivot pins
- Hardened stainless steel.
Together they provide a strong balance of precision, wear resistance, and low mass.
Why isn’t the cage aluminum?
The chain frequently contacts the derailleur cage, and steel is more resistant to:
- •Abrasion
- •Chain impacts
- •Long-term wear
Using steel at the chain-contact surfaces makes more sense than chasing a few grams of weight reduction.
Speed-specific cages
Cage width is specific to each drivetrain speed. The 10- and 11-speed cages are designed around compatible 10- and 11-speed road chains, and the 12-speed version uses a narrower, more precisely profiled cage made for selected 12-speed systems.
Questions about this product (15)
A (Ryden team): Compatible 2× mechanical road drivetrains, on road, endurance, fitness and all-road bikes.
What is the standard version?+
The 11-speed braze-on is our main version.
What chainring combinations does it support?+
It’s designed around 50/34T, 52/36T and 53/39T, plus 48/32T on selected all-road and endurance setups. Compatibility still depends on your crankset, chainline and frame.
What is the maximum front difference?+
The recommended maximum is 16 teeth, within a 14–16T range.
What is the maximum outer chainring?+
Approximately 53T.
Does it work with the Ryden Compact Road Crankset?+
Yes. Its 50/34T gearing is one of the derailleur’s primary pairings.
Is it compatible with the Ryden Road Double Crankset?+
Yes, in 50/34T, 52/36T or 53/39T, with the derailleur version that matches your drivetrain speed.
Is it mechanical?+
Yes. It’s cable-actuated.
Does it require a front shifter?+
Yes. It needs a compatible mechanical road front shifter with the right cable pull, such as the left lever of the 2×10 or 2×11 Ryden Road Integrated Shifters. A shifter isn’t included.
What does braze-on mean?+
The derailleur bolts onto a dedicated tab on the frame instead of clamping directly around the seat tube.
Can I use it on a frame without a braze-on mount?+
Yes, with the 10/11-speed clamp version, where your frame geometry allows. It comes with a clamp adapter in your choice of 31.8 or 34.9 mm. There’s no 28.6 mm size and no 12-speed clamp version.
Is it compatible with 10-speed?+
Yes, through the dedicated 10-speed braze-on version or the clamp version in 10-speed.
Is it compatible with 11-speed?+
Yes. The 11-speed braze-on is our main version, and the clamp version also comes in 11-speed.
Does it work with every 12-speed road drivetrain?+
No. The 12-speed version is for selected 12-speed road systems only, so confirm yours with us before ordering.
Why does my chain rub slightly in extreme rear gears?+
Extreme chain angles bring the chain close to the front-derailleur cage. Proper setup and a compatible shifter’s trim positions reduce this, but avoid prolonged extreme cross-chaining.
