Ryden MTB Front Derailleur – TrailShift 2× Mechanical MTB Front Derailleur
The Ryden MTB Front Derailleur is a rugged mechanical front derailleur designed for compatible 2× mountain-bike, trekking, touring, and adventure drivetrains. Built around Ryden TrailShift 2X linkage geometry, a reinforced stainless-steel cage, generous mud clearance, and clamp or 11-speed direct-mount options, it is engineered to shift reliably between compact MTB chainrings such as 34/24T, 36/26T, and 38/28T. The main versions are optimized for 9- and 10-speed MTB drivetrains, with dedicated narrower-cage versions for selected 11-speed systems.
Measure the seat tube where the derailleur mounts and choose the matching clamp size.
Top pull: the cable reaches the derailleur from above, along the top tube. Bottom pull: it comes up from under the bottom bracket. Check how your frame routes the front derailleur cable.
Choose Boost 2× only if your frame is designed for a Boost 2× drivetrain with a front derailleur. Boost rear spacing alone doesn’t guarantee 2× front-derailleur compatibility.

Wide-range gearing, compact-ring shifting, trail durability, practical mechanical serviceability
MTB-specific linkage and cage shaping provide controlled movement between compact inner and outer chainrings.
Designed around smaller MTB chainrings rather than adapting a large-road-ring derailleur to off-road use.
Open cage shaping and mud-relief openings help reduce dirt and mud accumulation during trail riding.
Choose top pull or bottom pull to match your frame, or the dual-pull Ryden DualRoute version, which works with either.
A strong steel chain guide resists abrasion, trail contamination, and repeated chain contact.
Mountain-bike front shifting presents different engineering challenges from road front shifting. Road double systems often use large chainrings such as 50/34T or 52/36T and operate around relatively narrow road chainlines.
An MTB 2× drivetrain instead uses much smaller front rings, such as 36/26T, and typically has a wider chainline to clear wide tires, chainstays, suspension pivots, wider rear hubs, and mud.
The Ryden MTB Front Derailleur is designed specifically around these conditions. Its shorter-radius cage follows compact MTB outer chainrings more accurately than a road derailleur, while its linkage provides enough lateral movement for modern MTB double systems.
Ryden TrailShift 2X geometry coordinates the cage movement with the Ryden MTB 2× Crankset, whose matched chainrings share the TrailShift 2X name.
The derailleur is aimed primarily at 9- and 10-speed mechanical MTB systems, where a 2× front drivetrain remains useful for riders who want broader gearing than a typical 1× setup.
The result is a front derailleur built around wide-range gearing, compact-ring shifting, trail durability, and practical mechanical serviceability.
Ryden TrailShift 2X
TrailShift 2X is the shifting system shared by this derailleur and the Ryden MTB 2× Crankset: the derailleur’s cage movement is coordinated with the crankset’s TrailShift chainrings. It includes:
- Compact-radius cage
- The cage curvature matches smaller MTB chainrings more closely than a road cage.
- High-stiffness linkage
- Reduces unwanted flex during front upshifts.
- Controlled cage sweep
- Keeps the chain guide aligned as it moves between the inner and outer rings.
- Mud-relief openings
- Reduce the tendency for debris to collect around the cage.
- MTB-specific shift timing
- Designed to work with compact front chainring gaps and the TrailShift chainring ramp system.
Why MTB cage geometry is different
A road front derailleur designed around a 50T ring has a large-radius cage. Placed over a 36T MTB chainring, that cage may not follow the ring closely enough, which can cause:
- •Poor chain control
- •Slow shifts
- •Excessive clearance
- •Increased risk of dropped chains
That’s why the MTB Front Derailleur uses a dedicated compact-ring cage.
Stainless-steel cage
MTB chain guides take chain abrasion, dirt, mud, gravel contamination, and impacts, so the cage is stainless steel. Steel adds a little weight, a worthwhile trade for its durability on the trail.
Forged aluminum linkage
The main outer linkage and the mount structure are forged aluminum, which keeps weight reasonable while preserving stiffness.
Ryden TrailSeal Pivots
The pivot areas get basic environmental protection:
- •Protective washers
- •Corrosion-resistant pivot pins
- •Low-friction bushings
- •Reduced contaminant entry
TrailSeal pivots help keep contamination out, but they aren’t fully waterproof. Keep cleaning and lubricating the pivots as described under Installation & care.
Questions about this product (15)
A (Ryden team): Compatible 2× mechanical MTB drivetrains, including trekking, touring, and adventure bikes.
What is the standard version?+
The 10-speed clamp-mount version.
Which chainring combinations does it support?+
It’s designed around 34/24T, 36/26T, and 38/28T.
What is the recommended default crankset?+
The Ryden MTB 2× Crankset in 36/26T.
What is the maximum outer chainring?+
Approximately 40T.
What is the typical front difference?+
Around 10T with the Ryden MTB 2× Crankset. The derailleur handles front differences up to approximately 14T.
Does it work with 9-speed?+
Yes. Choose the 9-speed version, or the dual-pull 9/10-speed version in 9-speed.
Does it work with 10-speed?+
Yes. 10-speed is the main application: choose the 10-speed version, or the dual-pull 9/10-speed version in 10-speed.
Can it work with 11-speed?+
Yes, with selected 11-speed MTB systems, through the dedicated narrower-cage 11-speed clamp or direct-mount version. Confirm your drivetrain with us before ordering.
Is it designed for 12-speed?+
No. There’s no 12-speed version: modern 12-speed MTB drivetrains are overwhelmingly built around 1×, so use a 1× setup such as the Ryden MTB 1× Crankset.
Can I install it on any mountain bike?+
No. The frame must support a front derailleur and have adequate crank, chainstay, tire, and cable-routing clearance.
Will it work on a Boost frame?+
Only if that particular frame is designed to support a Boost 2× drivetrain with a front derailleur. In that case, choose the Boost 2× chainline.
Does it support top-pull cables?+
Yes. Choose Top pull on the 9-, 10-, or 11-speed version, or the dual-pull 9/10-speed version, which accepts both.
Does it support bottom-pull cables?+
Yes. Choose Bottom pull on the 9-, 10-, or 11-speed version, or the dual-pull 9/10-speed Ryden DualRoute version, which accepts both.
Do I need a special front shifter?+
Yes. You need a compatible 2-position MTB front shifter with the correct cable pull. Contact us if you’re unsure.
