Chains
Ryden bicycle chains for every drivetrain: 6/7/8-speed through 12-speed derailleur chains, a heavy-duty 1/8" single-speed chain, and reinforced chains for e-bikes. Match the chain to the number of sprockets on your cassette.
Choosing the right bike chain
Match the chain to your drivetrain speed
Chains are speed-specific: the more sprockets on your rear cassette, the narrower the chain needs to be. Count the sprockets and choose the matching chain, from 6/7/8-speed through 12-speed. Mixing speeds leads to poor shifting and faster wear.
Single-speed and fixed-gear bikes
Most single-speed, fixed-gear, track and cruiser bikes use a wider 1/2" × 1/8" chain, but some modern single-speed bikes use narrower 3/32" parts. Check your chainring and rear sprocket before ordering.
E-bikes
On a mid-drive e-bike, motor power passes through the chain, so it carries far more load than on a conventional bike. The Ryden E-Bike Reinforced Chain comes in 9-, 10-, 11- and 12-speed versions, each with 136 links for longer e-bike frames.
Sizing and replacing your chain
Ryden chains ship longer than most bikes need and should be shortened to the correct length during installation. Measure wear with a chain-wear gauge and replace the chain on time to protect your cassette and chainrings.
Frequently asked questions
Which chain do I need?+
Count the sprockets on your rear cassette. A 6-, 7- or 8-speed drivetrain takes the Ryden 6/7/8-Speed Chain, and 9-, 10-, 11- and 12-speed drivetrains each take their own chain. Single-speed and fixed-gear bikes with 1/8" parts take the Ryden Single-Speed Chain, and mid-drive e-bikes are best served by the matching version of the E-Bike Reinforced Chain.
Is a quick link included?+
Yes. Every Ryden multi-speed chain includes a matching Ryden Quick Link, each E-Bike Reinforced Chain version includes a matching reinforced E-Bike Quick Link, and the Single-Speed Chain includes a Ryden Master Link.
Do I need to shorten a new chain?+
Usually, yes. Ryden chains ship with 112 to 136 links so they fit a wide range of bikes. The correct length depends on your chainrings, cassette, chainstay length and derailleur, and excess links are removed with a chain tool.
When should I replace my chain?+
Measure it with a chain-wear gauge rather than going by mileage. As a guide, replace 11- and 12-speed chains at around 0.5% elongation, 6- to 10-speed chains by around 0.75%, and single-speed chains at around 0.75 to 1%, following your drivetrain manufacturer’s recommendations.
What warranty do Ryden chains have?+
A 1-year limited warranty against manufacturing defects. Chains are wear components, so normal wear, incorrect installation or sizing, drivetrain incompatibility and corrosion from neglect are not covered.
