Ryden MTB 2× Crankset – Wide-Range Dual Chainring Mountain Bike Crankset
The Ryden MTB 2× Crankset is a wide-range dual-chainring crankset designed for mountain, trekking, adventure, touring, and utility bicycles where riders want broader gearing than a typical 1× drivetrain. Featuring hollow-forged aluminum crank arms, an integrated 24 mm steel spindle, matched 7075 aluminum chainrings, and Ryden TrailShift 2X front-shifting technology, it combines efficient climbing gears with higher top-end gearing for mixed terrain and long-distance riding. The standard 36/26T configuration with 170 mm crank arms provides a practical 10-tooth front gear step and works particularly well with compatible 9-, 10-, and selected 11-speed MTB drivetrains.
170 mm is the Ryden standard MTB length; 165 mm adds pedal clearance. Choose by bike fit, leg length and riding style rather than height alone.
Standard suits conventional frames. Boost 2× fits only Boost frames built for a front derailleur and two chainrings: confirm your frame with us before ordering.
11-speed: selected MTB and trekking systems only. Not designed for 12-speed.

An easier climbing gear and a higher top gear
Two front chainrings significantly extend the total available gearing, which is particularly useful for hills, long-distance riding, and loaded bicycles.
Matched inner and outer chainrings use MTB-specific shift ramps, pickup features, and tooth profiles for controlled front shifting.
A hollow structural design reduces unnecessary mass while maintaining pedaling stiffness.
The heat-treated steel spindle provides a durable crank interface and fits multiple frame standards with a compatible 24 mm bottom bracket.
Both rings can be replaced independently, reducing long-term ownership cost and allowing different gearing configurations where compatible.
Modern mountain bikes are increasingly associated with 1× drivetrains, but a single front chainring isn’t always the best solution. Some riders prioritize extremely broad gearing, long-distance efficiency, loaded touring, high-speed road transfers, easy climbing, and small jumps between commonly used ratios. For them, a 2× MTB drivetrain still offers meaningful advantages.
The Ryden MTB 2× Crankset combines two relatively compact front chainrings with a multi-speed rear cassette, creating a drivetrain capable of both very low climbing gears and significantly higher cruising ratios.
The standard setup pairs a 36T outer ring, for fast trails, gravel roads, flat terrain, touring, commuting, and descents, with a 26T inner ring for steep climbs, mountain terrain, loaded touring, and long ascents.
Unlike the Ryden MTB 1× Crankset, the chainrings are shaped for front shifting: Ryden TrailShift 2X coordinates both rings so the chain moves reliably between them under normal MTB pedaling.
Combined with hollow-forged crank arms and an integrated 24 mm spindle, the result is a durable, versatile front drivetrain for riders who value gear range over maximum mechanical simplicity.
Ryden TrailShift 2X
- Outer-ring pickup ramps
- Machined ramps help guide the chain upward from the smaller ring.
- Pickup pins
- Strategically positioned pins help lift the chain onto the outer chainring.
- Inner-ring release profiles
- Selected teeth help the chain disengage during shifts toward the smaller ring.
- MTB-specific tooth timing
- The two rings are rotationally matched so shift features align properly.
- Mud-aware geometry
- Open areas around the rings help reduce dirt accumulation compared with heavily enclosed designs.
Why these rings aren’t narrow-wide
A narrow-wide chainring is designed to keep the chain on one front ring, but a 2× crankset must deliberately move the chain between two. So the MTB 2× uses shift ramps, pickup features, and conventional shifting tooth profiles instead of narrow-wide teeth.
Ryden HollowForm MTB arms
Reinforced around the pedal eye, spider junction, spindle interface, and outer crank tip, the MTB arms prioritize impact durability slightly more than the road versions.
Questions about this product (15)
A (Ryden team): The Ryden MTB 2× uses 36/26T as its default configuration.
What other chainring combinations are available?+
34/24T and 38/28T.
Why choose 2× instead of 1×?+
A 2× drivetrain provides broader overall gearing, especially useful for touring, steep climbs, and fast road transfers.
Does it require a front derailleur?+
Yes.
Can it work on any mountain bike?+
No. The frame must have sufficient clearance and support for a front derailleur and dual chainrings.
What is the standard crank length?+
170 mm.
What other lengths are available?+
165 and 175 mm.
What spindle does it use?+
An integrated 24 mm steel spindle.
Is the bottom bracket included?+
No.
Is it compatible with 9-speed?+
Yes, through the 9-speed version.
What about 10-speed?+
Yes. This is one of its main intended applications.
Can I use it with 11-speed?+
Yes, for selected compatible 11-speed MTB or trekking systems.
Is it designed for 12-speed?+
No. Modern 12-speed drivetrains are built around 1×, so the Ryden MTB 1× Crankset is the better choice.
Can I replace the chainrings?+
Yes. Both rings are separately replaceable.
Which setup is best for touring and bikepacking?+
The 34/24T or 36/26T version with a compatible 11–34T or 11–36T cassette provides excellent low gearing and overall range.
