Choosing a shifter
Match your handlebar
Trigger, thumb and twist shifters clamp to the 22.2 mm control area of flat and riser bars. Drop-bar road bikes use integrated brake-and-shift levers such as the Ryden Road Integrated Shifters.
Match your drivetrain
A rear shifter is indexed for one speed, so choose the version that matches your cassette. A left shifter matches your chainrings (2× or 3×); a 1× bike needs no left shifter.
Match your derailleur
Indexed shifting only works when the shifter’s cable pull suits the derailleur, and a matching speed count alone doesn’t guarantee that. Each Ryden shifter lists the Ryden derailleurs it’s made for; for anything else, contact us.
Pick a style
Trigger shifters are quick and precise for mountain, hybrid and trekking bikes. Thumb shifters are simple and easy to service, with friction backup on the touring versions. Twist shifters are easy to learn for city and recreational riding.
Frequently asked questions
Which shifter do I need?+
Start with your handlebar (flat or drop), then your rear speed and number of chainrings. Choose the matching right shifter, plus a 2× or 3× left shifter if your bike has more than one chainring, or a matched Shifter Set.
Do I need a left shifter?+
Only if your bike has two or three chainrings and a front derailleur. A 1× drivetrain uses the right shifter alone.
Will any 9-speed shifter work with my 9-speed derailleur?+
Not necessarily. Indexed shifting only works when the shifter’s cable pull matches the derailleur. Each Ryden shifter lists the Ryden derailleurs it pairs with; contact us about any other combination.
Are cables included?+
Yes. Every Ryden shifter includes a stainless inner shift cable, one per shifter. Housing is included only in the “+ housing kit” versions and the Touring Thumb Pairs.
Do Ryden shifters include brake levers?+
Only the Road Integrated Shifters, which combine brake and shift levers for drop bars. Trigger, thumb and twist shifters mount separately from your brake levers.
What warranty do Ryden shifters have?+
A 1-year limited warranty against manufacturing defects, as for all Ryden drivetrain components. Wear from use, such as worn cables or grips, is not covered.
