Choosing a chainring

Match your drivetrain

A 1× drivetrain uses a narrow-wide ring that keeps the chain engaged without a front derailleur. A 2× road drivetrain uses a matched double set with shift ramps and pickup pins. Single-speed and fixed-gear bikes use a simple ring with uniform teeth.

Match the mount

Chainrings are not universal. Check your crankset’s BCD and bolt pattern, or its direct-mount interface, and choose that version. On a mid-drive e-bike, the motor model and generation decide the fit.

Match the chain

Choose the version for your chain speed or, on a single-speed bike, your chain width: 1/8" or 3/32".

Choose your size

Smaller rings make climbing easier; larger rings are faster on flat ground. A big change in tooth count can change the chain length you need, so recheck it after switching.

Frequently asked questions

What is a narrow-wide chainring?+

It uses alternating narrow and wide teeth that correspond to the alternating spaces inside the bicycle chain, helping improve chain retention on 1× drivetrains.

Which chainring fits my crank?+

Check the crankset’s BCD and bolt pattern, or its direct-mount interface, and choose the matching version. Every Ryden chainring comes in separate mount versions, because no chainring fits every crank.

Can I use a narrow-wide ring with a front derailleur?+

No. Narrow-wide rings are for dedicated 1× drivetrains. For a 2× road drivetrain, use the Ryden Road Double Chainring.

Do I need to change my chain when I change chainring size?+

Possibly. Significant tooth-count changes can alter the required chain length, so recheck chain length and tension after changing size.

What warranty do Ryden chainrings have?+

A 1-year limited warranty against manufacturing defects, as for all Ryden drivetrain components. Chainring teeth wear with use, and that wear is not covered.
