Where a first bike becomes a real bike: gears, range, and independence
The Ryden Kids 20 marks an important stage in a young cyclist’s development. While the Kids 12 and Kids 16 focus primarily on learning balance, pedalling, steering, and braking, the Kids 20 introduces children to a more capable bicycle with multiple gears and greater versatility.
Its lightweight 6061 aluminum frame uses junior-specific geometry to keep the bicycle easy to control. A low standover height helps children mount and dismount confidently, while the cockpit is proportioned specifically for smaller riders rather than simply using downsized adult components.
The biggest advancement is the Shimano 7-speed drivetrain. A simple twist shifter allows young riders to select easier gears when climbing and harder gears when riding faster on flat terrain. This introduces gear shifting without overwhelming the rider with a complicated multi-chainring drivetrain.
The 20-inch alloy wheels are fitted with wide 2.0-inch pneumatic tires, giving the Kids 20 enough versatility for neighbourhood riding, paved cycling paths, parks, compact gravel, and easy recreational trails. Front and rear V-brakes are paired with short-reach junior brake levers so smaller hands can comfortably control braking.
Unlike the Kids 12 and Kids 16, training wheels are not standard equipment on the Kids 20. This model is intended primarily for children who have already developed basic balance and independent cycling skills.
The result is a proper junior bicycle that encourages children to ride farther, tackle more varied terrain, and begin learning the cycling skills they will use throughout the rest of the Ryden range.

Questions about this product (15)
A (Ryden team): It is generally designed for children approximately 6 to 9 years old, particularly riders around 115 to 135 cm tall. Height and inseam are better indicators than age alone.
Does the Ryden Kids 20 have gears?+
Yes. It features a Shimano 1x7 drivetrain, giving the rider seven gears without the complexity of a front derailleur.
Why introduce gears on the Kids 20?+
At this stage, many children begin riding farther and encountering hills. Multiple gears make climbing easier while allowing higher speeds on flat terrain, and teach an important cycling skill.
How does the child change gears?+
A junior-friendly Shimano RevoShift twist shifter allows the rider to change gears by rotating part of the handlebar grip.
Does it come with training wheels?+
No. The Kids 20 is primarily designed for children who can already balance and ride independently.
Can training wheels be installed?+
Aftermarket training-wheel systems exist for some 20-inch bicycles, but they should only be used if specifically compatible with the frame, axle, and derailleur configuration. They are not a standard Ryden Kids 20 accessory.
Does it have coaster brakes?+
No. The Kids 20 uses front and rear hand-operated V-brakes, helping children transition toward the controls found on larger bicycles.
Can my child ride it on trails?+
Yes, on easy recreational trails, maintained gravel paths, grass, and compact dirt. It is not designed for technical mountain biking, large jumps, or aggressive downhill riding.
Why doesn’t it have suspension?+
A rigid fork keeps the bike lighter, simpler, and more efficient. For the intended terrain, wide pneumatic tires provide useful cushioning without the extra weight of an inexpensive suspension fork.
Is the Ryden Kids 20 suitable for longer family rides?+
Yes. The larger wheels, seven-speed drivetrain, comfortable geometry, and relatively low weight make it much better suited to family cycling than smaller single-speed children’s bikes.
Can the saddle be adjusted?+
Yes. The adjustable seatpost provides room to accommodate growth within the recommended rider-height range, from approximately 59 cm to 70 cm.
What happens when my child outgrows it?+
The next step is a 24-inch Ryden: the Junior MTB for trail riding, or the Junior Road for faster riding on pavement. Choose on height and inseam rather than age.
How much assembly is required?+
The bike ships approximately 85 to 90% assembled. Depending on packaging, the handlebar, front wheel, pedals, saddle, and other components may require installation or adjustment. Gears and brakes should be checked before the first ride.
What warranty is included?+
A 5-year limited warranty on the frame, a 2-year limited warranty on the fork, wheels and brakes, and a 1-year limited warranty on other components, excluding tires, tubes, brake pads, grips, chains, and other normal wear items.
Why choose the Ryden Kids 20?+
The Ryden Kids 20 is where the Ryden children’s lineup begins transitioning from learning bikes to genuine adventure bicycles. Its lightweight aluminum construction, Shimano 7-speed drivetrain, larger 20-inch wheels, dual hand brakes, and child-specific controls give young cyclists more independence without making the bicycle unnecessarily complicated.
