Ryden E-Bike Chainring – Reinforced High-Torque Mid-Drive Chainring
The Ryden E-Bike Chainring is a reinforced 1× chainring designed for the higher drivetrain loads generated by compatible mid-drive electric bicycles. Featuring hardened steel teeth, a lightweight 7075 aluminum carrier, Ryden E-Lock narrow-wide tooth profiling, reinforced mounting architecture, and motor-specific offset options, it provides dependable chain engagement and long-term durability for e-commuter, e-touring, e-MTB, e-cargo, and utility e-bikes. The standard 38T configuration delivers a practical balance between climbing ability and everyday cruising speed, while 32T–46T versions let riders tune gearing for MTB, cargo, touring, or urban applications.
Motor-compatible versions fit selected motor generations, not every motor from that brand. Confirm your motor model and generation with us before ordering.
Some 12-speed chains use proprietary shapes: check your drivetrain with us if you’re unsure.

Designed around the realities of high-torque mid-drive e-bikes
A hardened steel tooth section and reinforced mounting structure are designed for the repeated loads created when motor assistance and rider input both pass through the drivetrain.
An e-bike-specific narrow-wide tooth pattern improves chain engagement and retention on compatible 1× drivetrains.
Hardened steel provides wear resistance where the chain engages, while a 7075 aluminum carrier reduces unnecessary weight.
Different offsets and mounting interfaces help maintain proper chainline across compatible mid-drive systems.
32T through 46T options let riders tune the bicycle for technical climbing, cargo use, touring, commuting, or faster urban riding.
Mid-drive electric bicycles place unique demands on the front chainring. On a conventional bicycle, power is transmitted primarily from the rider through the crank, chainring, chain, and cassette. On a mid-drive e-bike, motor assistance is added to that same drivetrain, so the chainring may need to transmit rider power plus motor assistance through the same teeth, chain, and mounting interface.
The Ryden E-Bike Chainring is designed around those increased loads. Rather than using a lightweight all-aluminum structure throughout, it combines hardened steel teeth with a lighter 7075 aluminum carrier. This hybrid architecture gives the high-wear tooth section the durability of steel while keeping the total component weight lower than a fully steel chainring.
The Ryden E-Lock tooth profile uses alternating narrow and wide tooth sections to improve chain engagement on compatible 1× systems, while larger tooth roots provide additional material where drivetrain loads are concentrated.
The chainring is also offered in motor-specific mounting and offset versions, because e-bike chainline varies substantially between drive systems. Correct chainline is critical for smooth shifting, reduced chain and cassette wear, better chain retention, and lower drivetrain noise.
The result is not simply a stronger version of a conventional chainring. It is a component designed specifically around the realities of high-torque mid-drive e-bikes.
Ryden E-Lock tooth profile
- Alternating narrow/wide teeth
- Improves chain engagement on compatible 1× drivetrains.
- Reinforced tooth roots
- Additional material around the base of each tooth helps support higher repeated loads.
- Controlled tooth height
- Provides greater engagement than a conventional shifting chainring without creating excessive drag.
- Rounded entry chamfers
- Help the chain settle onto the ring during articulation.
- Wear-optimized steel surface
- The steel teeth receive a corrosion- and wear-resistant surface treatment.
Why steel teeth?
A lightweight 7075 chainring is excellent for many conventional bikes. For a high-torque e-bike, however, durability becomes more important than minimizing every gram. Steel teeth provide:
- •Greater wear resistance
- •Better tolerance of sustained torque
- •Longer potential service life
- •Better suitability for cargo and commuting
- •Better resistance to repeated motor-assisted acceleration
The tradeoff is additional weight. For an e-bike that may already weigh 20–30 kg or more, an extra few dozen grams is usually a sensible compromise for drivetrain durability.
Why an aluminum carrier?
A completely steel chainring would be durable but unnecessarily heavy. The carrier does not experience chain-tooth wear the way the teeth do, so the ring combines a hardened steel tooth ring for wear and torque with a 7075 aluminum carrier for low weight and structural support.
Ryden E-Force architecture
The chainring belongs to the same E-Force family as the Ryden E-Bike Reinforced Chain, with:
- •Reinforced tooth roots
- •Hardened steel teeth
- •A high-strength carrier
- •A reinforced mounting interface
- •E-bike-specific chainline
Questions about this product (15)
A (Ryden team): It is designed for compatible mid-drive electric bicycles using 1× drivetrains.
What is the default tooth count?+
38T.
What sizes are available?+
32T, 34T, 36T, 38T, 40T, 42T, 44T, and 46T.
What material is it made from?+
It uses a hardened steel tooth section with a 7075 aluminum carrier.
Why not make the entire ring from aluminum?+
Steel teeth provide greater wear resistance for high-torque motor-assisted drivetrains.
Is it narrow-wide?+
Yes. It uses the Ryden E-Lock narrow-wide retention profile.
Can I use it on any e-bike?+
No. The motor/crank mounting interface, chainline, drivetrain speed, and chain must all match.
Is it compatible with Bosch motors?+
The Bosch-compatible version fits selected Bosch systems. Confirm your motor generation with us before ordering.
Is it compatible with Shimano STEPS?+
The Shimano STEPS-compatible version fits selected STEPS systems. Confirm your motor generation with us before ordering.
Can it be used on an e-MTB?+
Yes. 32T–36T versions are particularly suitable.
Which size is best for commuting?+
Usually 40T–44T, depending on wheel size, cassette, terrain, and desired cadence.
Which size is best for cargo e-bikes?+
Generally 34T–38T for hillier conditions, provided the drivetrain supports the gearing.
Which chain should I use?+
The best pairing is a speed-specific Ryden E-Bike Reinforced Chain where compatible.
Will it work with every 12-speed chain?+
No. 12-speed systems can use proprietary chain profiles, so compatibility must be specifically confirmed.
Does changing chainring size affect chain length?+
Yes. Significant tooth-count changes can require chain resizing and derailleur setup changes.
