Higher load capacity. Precise shifting. Built for e-bikes.
Heat-treated pins, hardened plates, and strengthened riveting are designed around the higher drivetrain loads commonly created by mid-drive electric motors.
Dedicated 9-, 10-, 11-, and 12-speed versions maintain appropriate chain width and shifting characteristics for compatible drivetrains.
Extra chain length provides greater flexibility for long-chainstay e-bikes, trekking bikes, cargo bikes, and other electric-bike frame designs.
An upgraded low-friction, anti-corrosion surface treatment helps protect the chain from moisture, road spray, dirt, and frequent everyday use.
Each version includes a matching high-load Quick Link engineered specifically for that chain width.
Electric bicycles can place very different demands on a chain compared with conventional bicycles. This is especially true for mid-drive e-bikes. With a mid-drive system, both the rider’s pedaling force and motor assistance are transmitted through the chainring, chain, and cassette. That can subject the chain to substantially greater repeated loads, particularly when accelerating, climbing, carrying cargo, or shifting under motor assistance.
The Ryden E-Bike Reinforced Chain is designed around those conditions. Rather than simply taking a standard bicycle chain and labeling it “e-bike compatible,” it uses upgraded pins, riveting, plate material, heat treatment, surface protection, and quality-control tolerances.
The chain still needs to shift accurately, so it comes in separate versions for modern 9-, 10-, 11-, and 12-speed systems. Each version uses the same overall design philosophy: higher load capacity, precise shifting, improved durability, and corrosion protection.
At 136 links, it also provides significantly more initial length than Ryden’s conventional chains, allowing it to accommodate longer e-bike frames and large drivetrain combinations before being cut to the correct final size.
Why e-bikes need a reinforced chain
A conventional bicycle chain receives primarily human pedaling input. A mid-drive e-bike can add significant motor assistance through the same drivetrain, so during acceleration or climbing the chain can experience combined loads from rider input plus motor assistance. Those loads become especially demanding when:
- •Starting in a high gear
- •Climbing steep gradients
- •Carrying cargo
- •Riding a heavy e-bike
- •Shifting under full assistance
- •Using high-assistance modes
- •Frequently stopping and starting
A reinforced chain cannot eliminate drivetrain wear, but it is designed to tolerate those conditions better than a lightweight conventional chain.
Ryden E-Force Reinforcement System
- Reinforced pins
- Heat-treated pins provide additional resistance to repeated drivetrain loading.
- High-strength plates
- Hardened plates are designed for a balance of strength, fatigue resistance, and appropriate lateral flexibility.
- Strengthened riveting
- The pin-to-plate interface receives particular attention because this is a critical structural area of any bicycle chain.
- Hardened rollers
- Designed to withstand repeated contact with cassette and chainring teeth.
- Tight production tolerances
- Especially important for narrow 11- and 12-speed e-bike drivetrains.
Ryden LF-X treatment
The E-Bike Reinforced Chain uses Ryden’s most durable chain surface treatment, Ryden LF-X Low-Friction Extreme-Duty Protection. Its goals include:
- •Lower surface friction
- •Improved corrosion resistance
- •Reduced oxidation
- •Better moisture protection
- •Smooth roller articulation
- •Improved cleanliness
- •Better resistance to frequent commuting conditions
“Extreme-duty” refers to the intended usage category, not a claim of unlimited strength.
Why 136 links?
E-bikes often use different frame designs from conventional bicycles, such as:
- •Extended chainstays
- •Cargo frames
- •Long-wheelbase utility bikes
- •Large cassettes
- •Large frames
- •Suspension layouts
- •Mid-drive motor packaging
So every version comes with 136 links, and the installer removes any unused links. It is much easier to shorten a chain than to discover that a new chain is too short.

Questions about this product (15)
A (Ryden team): It uses reinforced plates, pins, riveting, and surface treatment designed around the additional drivetrain loads commonly associated with electric bicycles.
Is there one chain for every e-bike?+
No. Choose the version matching your drivetrain speed and compatibility requirements.
What versions are available?+
9-, 10-, 11-, and 12-speed.
How many links are included?+
Each version contains 136 links before sizing.
Why does an e-bike chain need 136 links?+
Electric bicycles, particularly cargo and trekking models, can use longer frames and drivetrain layouts. The extra links provide greater installation flexibility.
Is it suitable for mid-drive motors?+
Yes. Mid-drive e-bikes are the primary intended application.
Will it work with Bosch motors?+
Bosch is the motor system rather than the chain standard. Compatibility depends on your bicycle’s cassette, chainring, and drivetrain specification.
Can it work with Shimano STEPS?+
Yes, where the specific drivetrain configuration is compatible. As with Bosch, the motor brand does not determine chain compatibility.
Can I use it with a hub-motor e-bike?+
Yes, provided the drivetrain itself is compatible, although hub motors do not normally transmit motor power through the chain.
Does it come with a Quick Link?+
Yes. A matching reinforced Quick Link is included.
Can I use the 12-speed version on every 12-speed system?+
No. Some modern 12-speed drivetrains use proprietary chain architectures, so confirm your drivetrain with us before ordering.
Can I use this chain on a normal bicycle?+
A matching speed version may work, but the additional reinforcement and weight are usually unnecessary for a conventional bicycle.
When should I replace it?+
Regularly measure wear. For many modern narrow-speed e-bike drivetrains, around 0.5% elongation is a sensible conservative service checkpoint, subject to drivetrain manufacturer guidance.
Does reinforcement mean the chain cannot break?+
No. Any chain can fail due to excessive wear, improper installation, damage, incompatible components, poor maintenance, or extreme loads.
Is it suitable for electric cargo bikes?+
Yes. Cargo e-bikes are one of the strongest use cases for the reinforced design, provided drivetrain compatibility and chain length are correct.
