Precision, wide range, chain control and trail durability for 1×12 mountain biking
Designed around modern 1×12 mountain-bike cassettes with climbing sprockets up to 52 teeth on the Trail Wide 12, or 50 teeth on the Trail 12.
A chain-stabilizing cage clutch, standard on both versions, reduces uncontrolled cage movement, chain slap, and derailment risk over rough terrain.
Twelve-speed-specific linkage keeps the upper pulley accurately placed across a very wide cassette range.
A 12T guide pulley and a larger 14T tension pulley provide smooth chain articulation and stable chain management.
An aluminum body, reinforced cage, TrailSeal II sealed pivots, and impact-conscious design make it suitable for serious off-road riding.
The Ryden 12-Speed MTB Rear Derailleur is Ryden’s flagship mechanical MTB rear derailleur and, in its Trail Wide 12 version, the natural partner for the 10–52T Ryden Wide-Range MTB Cassette.
A modern 1×12 MTB derailleur has one of the most demanding jobs in a mechanical bicycle drivetrain. It must move the chain accurately across twelve closely spaced sprockets on a cassette that can range from 10T to 52T, an enormous difference in sprocket diameter.
At the same time, it has to maintain chain tension while the bike moves through rough terrain, suspension travel, drops, rock gardens, technical climbs, and high-speed descents. The Ryden 12-Speed MTB Rear Derailleur is engineered specifically around those requirements.
Its TrailShift 12 parallelogram geometry controls both lateral derailleur movement and the path of the upper guide pulley as the chain moves toward the larger sprockets.
Unlike Ryden’s lower-speed rear derailleurs, where a clutch is either unavailable or a separate version, this model has a clutch as standard. The TrailLock II clutch resists uncontrolled cage rotation, helping keep the chain under tension when impacts or suspension movement would otherwise make it whip violently.
A long cage takes up the chain-length change of a 10–52T or 11–50T cassette, while large GlideWheel 12 pulleys guide the chain smoothly through the drivetrain.
The result is a derailleur built around four priorities: precision, wide range, chain control, and trail durability.
Ryden TrailShift 12
TrailShift 12 is the derailleur’s core shifting technology: twelve-speed-specific linkage geometry that combines:
- Wide-arc pulley tracking
- The upper pulley doesn’t just move sideways. It also follows the increasing radius of the cassette as it approaches the largest sprocket.
- Tight pivot tolerances
- Twelve-speed indexing leaves less room for mechanical play than lower-speed drivetrains.
- Reinforced parallelogram
- Stiffer linkage helps preserve alignment when shifting under trail loads.
- Progressive spring tuning
- Return-spring force is tuned for positive shifting without unnecessarily heavy lever effort.
- 52T-specific B-knuckle geometry
- The body provides enough clearance for very large climbing sprockets.
Ryden TrailLock II clutch
Both versions include the Ryden TrailLock II clutch, which builds on TrailLock, the clutch on the MTB long cage TrailLock clutch version of the Ryden 11-Speed Rear Derailleur. Its job is to resist rapid, uncontrolled cage rotation.
Without a clutch, rough impacts can make the lower cage move forward rapidly, temporarily releasing chain tension. TrailLock II reduces that movement. Benefits include:
- •Reduced chain slap
- •Improved chain retention
- •Quieter descending
- •Better rough-terrain stability
- •More controlled 1× drivetrain behavior
Why the clutch is standard
TrailLock II is standard on the 12-speed MTB because it’s built specifically for:
- •Mountain biking
- •Wide-range 1× drivetrains
- •Rough terrain
- •50T and 52T cassettes
That’s why there’s no version without a clutch.
Clutch positions
TrailLock II has two positions:
- Ride
- Clutch engaged. Use it for normal riding.
- Service
- Reduces clutch resistance for rear-wheel removal, chain installation, and derailleur servicing.
The clutch is factory-tuned, so there’s nothing to adjust in normal use: just switch between Ride and Service.
Cage design
The long cage prioritizes:
- •52T clearance
- •Chain tension
- •Impact resistance
- •Controlled movement
- Outer cage plate
- 7075 aluminum.
- Inner cage plate
- Reinforced for impact resistance.
- Cage pivot
- Hardened steel axle with the TrailLock II clutch interface.
Ryden GlideWheel 12 pulleys
- 12T guide pulley
- Optimized for accurate sprocket tracking.
- 14T tension pulley
- Helps manage chain articulation through the long cage.
Both pulleys feature:
- •Reinforced composite pulley bodies
- •Low-friction rotation
- •Mud-clearance tooth shaping
- •Replaceable hardware
Ryden TrailSeal II
Because this derailleur is ridden off-road, its pivots get improved environmental protection:
- •Sealed pivot washers
- •Corrosion-resistant pivot pins
- •Drain channels
- •Low-friction bushings
- •A protected clutch housing
TrailSeal II makes the derailleur weather- and contamination-resistant, not waterproof. Keep cleaning it as described under Installation & care.
Ryden MicroIndex 12
12-speed drivetrains are highly sensitive to small changes in cable tension, so the derailleur has a Ryden MicroIndex 12 fine-thread barrel adjuster that changes cable tension in very small steps. That makes precise mechanical indexing easier.
Impact protection
Rear derailleurs are vulnerable to rocks, falls, trail debris, transport, and bike racks. To protect it without making it excessively heavy, this derailleur uses:
- •A reinforced outer link
- •Replaceable lower cage hardware
- •Recessed fasteners
- •Rounded impact surfaces
Questions about this product (15)
A (Ryden team): Compatible 1×12 mountain-bike drivetrains, for XC, trail, all-mountain, enduro, adventure, and bikepacking riding.
What is the maximum rear sprocket?+
52T on the Trail Wide 12, our main version, and 50T on the Trail 12.
Does it work with the Ryden 10–52T Wide-Range MTB Cassette?+
Yes, in the Trail Wide 12 version. It’s the derailleur’s main pairing. The Trail 12 tops out at 50T, so it doesn’t suit that cassette.
Does it also work with Ryden’s 11–50T cassette?+
Yes. Both versions work with the 11–50T Wide Range size of the Ryden 12-Speed Cassette as part of a Ryden 12-speed MTB drivetrain.
Which chain should I use?+
The Ryden 12-Speed Chain, or another 12-speed MTB chain we’ve confirmed for your drivetrain.
Does it have a clutch?+
Yes. TrailLock II is standard on both versions.
What does the clutch do?+
It resists uncontrolled cage movement, reducing chain slap and improving chain stability over rough terrain.
Can I turn the clutch off?+
You can switch it to Service. TrailLock II has two positions: Ride for normal riding, and Service, which reduces clutch resistance for wheel removal, chain installation, and derailleur servicing.
Is it compatible with 1×12 only?+
Yes. It’s designed for 1×12 only.
Can I use it with a 2×12 MTB drivetrain?+
No. It isn’t designed or supported for 2×12: a second chainring raises the total capacity needed beyond what the cage is built for.
Does it work with any 12-speed shifter?+
No. The shifter’s cable-pull ratio must match the derailleur. The 12-speed MTB Ryden Trigger Shifter is made for it; with any other shifter, confirm yours with us before ordering.
Does the cassette’s freehub type affect derailleur compatibility?+
Not directly. HG, Micro Spline, XD, and other freehub standards determine how the cassette mounts to the wheel. The derailleur needs compatible sprocket spacing, range, chain, and actuation.
Can it be used with a 10T smallest sprocket?+
Yes, in the Trail Wide 12 version with the 10–52T Ryden Wide-Range MTB Cassette.
Why is B-gap so important?+
The guide pulley has to stay at the correct distance from very large 50T and 52T sprockets to shift accurately without touching them.
Is it suitable for e-MTB?+
Only where we’ve confirmed the complete drivetrain for e-bike loads, so contact us first. It isn’t a dedicated e-bike derailleur, and high-torque mid-drive systems put extra load on it.
