Affordable shifting, broad 7/8-speed compatibility, easy maintenance

Ryden ShiftPath 8 Geometry

A parallelogram linkage keeps the guide pulley aligned with the selected rear sprocket as the derailleur moves across the cassette.

7/8-Speed Dual Compatibility

One derailleur serves a broad range of affordable bicycles with compatible 7- or 8-speed indexed shifting systems.

Up to 34T Rear Sprocket Support

The long-cage version works with practical wide-range urban and recreational gearing, such as 11–34T cassettes and 14–34T freewheels.

Durable Steel Cage

A steel pulley cage provides good impact tolerance and keeps replacement cost reasonable.

Easy Mechanical Serviceability

Conventional limit screws, straightforward cable-tension adjustment, replaceable pulleys, and a standard hanger mount make the derailleur easy to service.

A rear derailleur performs two jobs at the same time. First, it moves the chain sideways across the rear sprockets. Second, it keeps the chain under tension as the drivetrain moves between different gear combinations.

The Ryden 7/8-Speed Rear Derailleur is built for bicycles where reliability, affordability, and easy servicing matter more than ultra-light construction or advanced clutch systems.

The derailleur uses a conventional spring-loaded parallelogram mechanism. When you operate the shifter, cable tension moves the derailleur body sideways so the upper guide pulley tracks beneath the selected sprocket. At the same time, the lower cage rotates to absorb changes in chain length.

That lets it work with 1×7, 2×7, 3×7, 1×8, 2×8, and 3×8 drivetrains, provided the total drivetrain capacity and the largest rear sprocket stay within the limits of the cage you choose.

The standard long-cage model takes a rear sprocket up to 34 teeth, making it a strong match for hybrid, trekking, commuter, recreational MTB, and kids’ bikes.

The result is affordable shifting, broad 7- and 8-speed compatibility, and easy maintenance.

Ryden ShiftPath 8

ShiftPath 8 is the derailleur’s linkage geometry. It keeps the pulley-to-sprocket alignment consistent through:

Parallel linkage movement
As cable tension changes, the derailleur moves sideways while keeping the correct orientation to the cassette.
Controlled guide-pulley path
The upper pulley follows the increasing diameter of the cassette as it moves inward.
Spring-assisted return
Releasing cable tension lets the derailleur spring move the chain toward the smaller sprockets.
Stable pivot layout
Reduces unwanted flex during ordinary shifting.

Construction

Parallelogram body
Forged aluminum.
Outer parallelogram plate
Slightly reinforced, favoring impact resistance over the lowest possible weight.
Cage
Steel, for good impact tolerance and reasonable replacement cost.
Pivot hardware
Hardened steel.
Springs
Dual mechanical return and tension springs, with adjustable B-tension.

Pulley system

Upper guide pulley
Places the chain beneath the selected sprocket.
Lower tension pulley
Maintains chain tension.

Both pulleys are 11T, a simple size that keeps replacement straightforward. The pulley wheels are glass-fiber reinforced composite, chosen for:

  • •Light weight
  • •Quiet running
  • •Low cost
  • •Corrosion resistance

The pulleys run on low-friction bushings.

No clutch

This derailleur doesn’t have a clutch. It’s built for city and recreational bikes, which generally prioritize:

  • •Low cost
  • •Simplicity
  • •Low service complexity

A clutch adds cost, weight, and internal complexity. If you ride aggressive trails and want a clutch derailleur, Ryden’s clutch options are the MTB long cage TrailLock clutch version of the Ryden 11-Speed Rear Derailleur and the Ryden 12-Speed MTB Rear Derailleur, which has the TrailLock II clutch as standard. Each needs a complete drivetrain of its own speed. The 12-speed model is for Ryden 12-speed MTB drivetrains and confirmed compatible systems only, so confirm yours with us before ordering.

Built for everyday knocks

A rear derailleur sits exposed on the right side of the bicycle. Common sources of damage include:

  • •Falls
  • •Bike racks
  • •Curbs
  • •Trail obstacles
  • •Shipping
  • •The bike being laid on its derailleur side

The outer parallelogram plate is slightly reinforced to help it take these knocks. On kids’, utility, and recreational bikes especially, avoid resting the bike on its derailleur side, take care on bike racks and when packing the bike for shipping, and check the hanger alignment after any impact.

Finishes

Stealth Black
The standard finish.
Silver
Suits classic city and trekking bikes.

Both carry simple RYDEN 7/8 branding on the outer body.

Asked by Ryden team, 0 helpful votes
What is the default version?+

The long cage, which takes rear sprockets up to 34T.

Can it work with the Ryden 7-Speed Freewheel?+

Yes. The 14–28T version works with any cage, and the 14–34T version needs the long cage. In both cases your drivetrain’s total capacity must be within the cage’s limit.

Can it work with the Ryden 8-Speed Cassette?+

Yes. It’s designed to pair with both versions: 11–32T needs the medium or long cage, and 11–34T needs the long cage.

Which chain should I use?+

The Ryden 6/7/8-Speed Chain, for both 7- and 8-speed.

Can it be used on a 1× drivetrain?+

Yes. A 42T Ryden City/Hybrid Crankset with an 11–34T Ryden 8-Speed Cassette and the long cage is a simple 1×8 example.

Can it work with 2×?+

Yes, as long as your total capacity is within the cage you choose: approximately 28T short, 35T medium, or 43T long.

Can it work with a triple crankset?+

Yes, with the long cage on appropriate 3× drivetrains up to approximately 43T of total capacity, such as 42/32/22T with an 11–32T cassette (41T). If your triple is at or near 43T, such as 42/32/22T with 11–34T, contact us to check it before ordering.

Does it have a clutch?+

No.

Why doesn’t it have a clutch?+

It’s built for affordable city, hybrid, recreational, and traditional drivetrains, where low cost and simple servicing matter more. A clutch would add cost, weight, and complexity.

What is the maximum rear sprocket?+

34T on the long cage. The medium cage takes up to 32T and the short cage up to 28T.

Will it work with every 7- or 8-speed shifter?+

No. The shifter’s cable pull has to match, and a 7- or 8-speed label alone doesn’t guarantee that. Confirm your shifter with us before ordering.

What does the B-tension screw do?+

It controls the gap between the upper guide pulley and the cassette.

Why does shifting remain poor after cable adjustment?+

A bent derailleur hanger, worn chain, worn cassette or freewheel, or incompatible shifter may be responsible. Check the hanger alignment first.

Can I use it with a 9-speed cassette?+

No. Use the Ryden 9-Speed Rear Derailleur instead.
