Finer gear steps, wide-range 9-speed gearing, simple mechanical shifting

Ryden ShiftPath 9 Geometry

A refined parallelogram linkage keeps the guide pulley accurately aligned beneath each of the nine rear sprockets.

Up to 36T Rear Sprocket Support

The long-cage version is optimized for Ryden’s 11–34T and 11–36T 9-speed cassettes.

Wide Drivetrain Compatibility

Suitable for compatible 1×9, 2×9, and 3×9 configurations when your drivetrain’s largest cog and total capacity stay within the chosen cage’s limits.

Replaceable Low-Friction Pulley System

Separate guide and tension pulleys make routine servicing straightforward.

Durable Mechanical Construction

A forged aluminum body, reinforced cage, hardened pivots, and conventional cable adjustment make it suitable for daily-use and recreational bicycles.

Nine-speed drivetrains sit in a very practical middle ground. They provide noticeably finer gear spacing and broader gearing possibilities than basic 7- and 8-speed systems, while remaining simpler, more affordable, and less sensitive to adjustment than many modern higher-speed drivetrains.

The Ryden 9-Speed Rear Derailleur is designed around that balance. Its parallelogram mechanism moves the upper guide pulley laterally across nine rear sprockets as you change gears, and Ryden ShiftPath 9 geometry controls this movement so the pulley follows the cassette closely while keeping appropriate clearance as sprocket diameter increases.

At the same time, the spring-loaded lower cage absorbs changes in effective chain length. This allows the derailleur to support 1×9 MTB systems, 1×9 hybrid drivetrains, 2×9 trekking setups, and 3×9 traditional MTB or touring drivetrains.

The standard long-cage version is designed around a 36T maximum rear sprocket, matching the wider 11–36T option of the Ryden 9-Speed Cassette.

Moving up from a 7- or 8-speed drivetrain to 9-speed gives you finer gear steps and more gearing choice without the extra complexity or cost of higher-speed systems. The change takes more than a rear derailleur: you also need a 9-speed cassette, a 9-speed chain, and a 9-speed shifter with matching cable pull.

Ryden ShiftPath 9

ShiftPath 9 is the derailleur’s core shifting technology. It builds on the simpler ShiftPath 8 design of the Ryden 7/8-Speed Rear Derailleur, with tighter pulley tracking for nine closely spaced sprockets. It combines:

Refined parallelogram geometry
Keeps the derailleur body aligned as it travels laterally.
Progressive guide-pulley path
The pulley moves inward and also follows the growing sprocket diameter.
Reduced linkage flex
A stiffer outer linkage improves indexed shifting accuracy.
Controlled return spring
Provides consistent movement back toward the smaller sprockets.
Wide-range B-gap control
Allows adjustment for both 11–34T and 11–36T cassettes.

Ryden GlideWheel 9 pulleys

The pulley system uses an 11T guide pulley and an 11T tension pulley. Using the same size for both keeps pulley replacement simple. GlideWheel 9 features:

  • •Reinforced composite pulley teeth
  • •Low-friction bushings
  • •Corrosion-resistant hardware
  • •A replaceable design

Construction

Body
Forged aluminum.
Outer link
Aluminum, stiffened to reduce flex.
Cage
Aluminum outer plate with a steel-reinforced inner plate.
Pivot pins
Hardened stainless steel / steel.
Barrel adjuster
Integrated, for small cable-tension corrections without tools.

Compared with the Ryden 7/8-Speed Rear Derailleur, the 9-speed model has:

  • •More aluminum in the linkage
  • •Tighter pivot tolerances
  • •Improved spring consistency
  • •Better pulley alignment
  • •Slightly lower total mass

No clutch

The Ryden 9-Speed Rear Derailleur has no clutch. That keeps it affordable, lightweight, easy to service, and well suited to city, hybrid, and touring bikes.

A clutch derailleur resists uncontrolled cage movement, which helps on aggressive trail riding. Ryden’s clutch derailleurs are the Ryden 11-Speed Rear Derailleur in its MTB long cage TrailLock clutch version and the Ryden 12-Speed MTB Rear Derailleur, which has TrailLock II as standard. They’re for complete 11-speed and 12-speed MTB drivetrains, not 9-speed.

Finish

Choose Stealth Black, with RYDEN 9 branding on the outer link, or Silver/Black, a finish that suits trekking and hybrid bicycles.

Asked by Ryden team, 0 helpful votes
What is the standard version?+

The long cage, which takes rear sprockets up to 36T. Short-cage (28T) and medium-cage (34T) versions are also available.

Does it work with the Ryden 9-Speed Cassette?+

Yes. It’s designed around the cassette’s 11–34T and 11–36T options. Use the medium or long cage with 11–34T, and the long cage with 11–36T.

Which chain should I use?+

The Ryden 9-Speed Chain.

Can I use it on a 1×9 bike?+

Yes. For example, a 32T narrow-wide chainring with an 11–36T cassette needs 25T of capacity and the long cage; with 11–34T, the medium cage also works.

Can it work with a 2×9 drivetrain?+

Yes, provided total capacity stays within the selected cage’s rating and the largest cog within its limit. For example, 36/26T with 11–36T needs 35T and the long cage.

Can it work with 3×9?+

Yes. The long cage is the right choice for compatible triple systems, as long as the total stays within its approximately 45T capacity.

What is the maximum rear sprocket?+

36T on the long cage, 34T on the medium cage, and 28T on the short cage.

Does it have a clutch?+

No. For aggressive trail riding, a clutch derailleur is a better choice: the Ryden 11-Speed Rear Derailleur in its MTB long cage TrailLock clutch version, or the Ryden 12-Speed MTB Rear Derailleur with TrailLock II. They’re for 11-speed and 12-speed MTB drivetrains, not 9-speed.

What is the approximate long-cage capacity?+

Approximately 45T. The medium cage is approximately 37T and the short cage approximately 30T.

Is it compatible with 7- or 8-speed?+

No. Use the Ryden 7/8-Speed Rear Derailleur for those systems.

Can I use it with a 10-speed cassette?+

No. Use the Ryden 10-Speed Rear Derailleur.

Will it work with every third-party 9-speed shifter?+

Not necessarily. The shifter’s cable pull must match the derailleur. Contact us to check your shifter before ordering.

Why won’t my derailleur shift properly even after cable adjustment?+

A bent derailleur hanger, a worn chain or cassette, an incorrect B-gap, damaged cable housing, or an incompatible shifter may be responsible. Check hanger alignment first: a bent hanger is one of the most common causes of poor rear shifting.

What cage should I choose?+

The short cage for close-ratio 1× systems with cassettes up to 28T, the medium cage for many 1× and 2× setups up to 34T (including the Ryden 9-Speed Cassette in 11–34T), and the long cage for 11–36T, touring, and triple drivetrains.
