Ryden Twist Shifters – Ergonomic Rotational Mechanical Gear Controls
The Ryden Twist Shifters are easy-to-use mechanical drivetrain controls designed for compatible flat-bar bicycles. Using Ryden TwistClick Indexing, an ergonomic textured rotating grip, a clear Ryden GearView Ring gear indicator, and low-friction cable actuation, they let you change gears with a simple wrist movement while keeping secure control of the handlebar. Available for compatible 6/7-, 8-, 9-, and 10-speed rear drivetrains, plus dedicated 2× and 3× front-shifting versions and 3×7 and 3×8 sets, the range is particularly suited to city bikes, hybrids, recreational MTB, comfort bikes, and everyday commuters, and can suit youth bicycles when the rider can hold and turn the grip comfortably. Each right shifter is indexed for one rear speed, so choose the version that matches your drivetrain.
Includes the rotating grip section only: use a shortened stationary grip beside it.

Simple to understand, comfortable to operate, affordable to replace
Positive mechanical detents give you a defined position for each selected gear.
You simply rotate the shift section of the grip, with no separate shift paddles to find.
The highly visible numbered Ryden GearView Ring makes the system especially easy for new and recreational riders to understand.
Textured, rubberized Ryden ComfortGrip contact areas provide secure operation with bare hands or light gloves.
Replaceable shift cables, conventional housing, a cable service port, and straightforward internal indexing keep maintenance inexpensive.
A twist shifter combines your handlebar grip and drivetrain control in one compact interface. Instead of pressing a lever, you rotate part of the grip.
That rotation turns an internal indexing mechanism, which pulls or releases a specific amount of shift cable, and the cable moves the derailleur. On the rear, each indexed position corresponds to one cassette or freewheel sprocket. On the front, the left-hand Twist Shifter moves between two positions on a 2× drivetrain or three positions on a 3× drivetrain.
The greatest advantage is simplicity. There’s no need to learn which paddle performs which shift: the relationship between hand movement and gearing feels intuitive, especially for beginners, children, casual riders, city cyclists, and comfort-bike riders.
The Ryden Twist Shifters are made for everyday riding, where they’re easy to learn and comfortable to use. For performance MTB and rapid, precise single-gear shifts, the Ryden Trigger Shifters are the better choice.
The result is a shifter that’s simple to understand, comfortable to operate, and affordable to replace.
Ryden TwistClick
TwistClick is the indexing system inside every Ryden Twist Shifter. It includes:
- Positive gear detents
- Each gear has a defined indexed position.
- Controlled cable pull
- Rotation translates into the correct cable movement for the intended derailleur.
- Low-friction cam
- Reduces wrist effort.
- Secure position holding
- The mechanism resists moving unintentionally over rough pavement.
- Large visual gear scale
- The Ryden GearView Ring lets you see at a glance where you are in the gear range.
Ryden TwistHold detents
One potential disadvantage of any twist system is unintentional movement when you:
- •Pull hard on the bars
- •Move your hand on the grip
- •Ride rough terrain
TwistHold detents give enough indexing resistance to help prevent accidental movement while keeping wrist effort comfortable.
Detent feel by speed
Rotational effort is tuned to each speed level:
| Version | Rotational effort |
|---|---|
| 6/7- and 8-speed | Very light |
| 9-speed | Moderate, positive detents, with tighter detent and cable-spool tolerances than the lower-speed models |
| 10-speed | Stronger, more precise detent feel |
No version needs excessive wrist force.
Right and left shifters
- Right shifter
- Controls the rear derailleur. Rotating it one way increases cable tension and moves the chain toward the larger rear sprockets (easier gears); rotating it the other way releases cable and moves the derailleur toward the smaller sprockets (harder gears). Directional arrows molded into the shifter body show which way is which.
- Left 2× shifter
- Two positions, 1 / 2, for a double crankset.
- Left 3× shifter
- Three positions, 1 / 2 / 3, for a triple crankset.
Ryden ComfortGrip
The grip surface is especially important on a twist shifter, because you apply rotational force through your hand. ComfortGrip uses:
- •Soft-touch elastomer
- •A directional traction pattern
- •A sweat-resistant texture
- •A rounded transition to the stationary grip
- •No hard ridges at the palm contact area
Grip length
A twist shifter takes up more of the grip area than a trigger shifter, so the stationary grip beside it has to be shorter than a standard grip. A typical setup:
- Right side
- Twist shifter with a short matching stationary grip.
- Left side, 1× bikes
- A full-length grip.
- Left side, 2× and 3× bikes
- Left Twist Shifter with a shortened stationary grip.
Single Twist Shifters include the rotating grip section only: use a shortened stationary grip beside each one. The 3×7 and 3×8 sets include matching shortened stationary grips, so you don’t have to cut standard grips.
Mounting
The shifter body has integrated retention for the 22.2 mm flat-bar control area and mounts independently of the brake lever. It slides onto the bar, so you remove the existing grip to fit it.
Construction
- Main housing
- Glass-fiber reinforced composite.
- Rotating sleeve
- Reinforced composite core with a textured elastomer exterior.
- Index plate
- Hardened steel or durable engineering polymer, depending on version.
- Internal ratchet
- Hardened steel.
- Internal spring
- Stainless steel.
- Cable spool
- Reinforced composite.
Cable and service port
Every Ryden Twist Shifter includes a polished stainless-steel inner shift cable, one per shifter, so the 3×7 and 3×8 sets include two. Shift housing isn’t included.
A small cable service port lets you replace the cable without dismantling the whole shifter: see Installation & care.
Ryden ControlSeal
Twist Shifters often go on daily commuter bikes, so they use ControlSeal protection:
- •Protected cable entry
- •A drainage path
- •Corrosion-resistant springs
- •A shielded indexing mechanism
ControlSeal makes the shifter weather resistant, not waterproof. Don’t pressure-wash it.
Finish
Choose Black or Black-Grey.
Questions about this product (15)
A (Ryden team): Mechanical flat-bar shifters that you operate by rotating part of the handlebar grip.
What is the main version?+
The 8-speed right Twist Shifter, at $19.99.
Which rear speeds are available?+
6/7-, 8-, 9-, and 10-speed right shifters. The 6/7-speed version ships indexed for the rear speed you choose: 6 or 7.
Why is there no 12-speed Twist Shifter?+
Ryden’s 12-speed MTB drivetrain is better served by faster, more precise trigger shifting: the 12-speed MTB version of the Ryden Trigger Shifters, made for the Ryden 12-Speed MTB Rear Derailleur. Confirm your drivetrain with us before ordering.
Are front Twist Shifters available?+
Yes: dedicated 2× and 3× left-hand shifters, plus 3×7 and 3×8 sets.
Does it show the selected gear?+
Yes. Every Twist Shifter has a numbered Ryden GearView Ring indicator.
Can I shift several gears at once?+
Yes. A larger rotation moves through several indexed positions, with a detent at each one.
Does it come with a cable?+
Yes. Each shifter includes a stainless inner shift cable. Shift housing isn’t included.
Does it include the grip?+
Each shifter includes its rotating grip section. The 3×7 and 3×8 sets also include matching shortened stationary grips; with a single shifter, use a shortened stationary grip beside it.
What handlebar size does it fit?+
Standard 22.2 mm flat-bar control areas on flat and riser bars, and on comfort bars with a straight control area long enough for the shifter and a shortened grip.
Can it work with hydraulic brakes?+
Yes, alongside a separate hydraulic brake lever, provided there’s enough handlebar space for both. If your brake levers have built-in shifters, you’ll need separate brake levers.
Can I use the 8-speed shifter with the Ryden 7/8-Speed Rear Derailleur?+
Yes, on a compatible 8-speed drivetrain such as the Ryden 8-Speed Cassette with the Ryden 6/7/8-Speed Chain.
Can a 9-speed Twist Shifter operate a 10-speed cassette?+
No. The indexing positions and cable movement differ. A 10-speed drivetrain needs the 10-speed Twist Shifter, and its rear derailleur must match that shifter’s cable pull: contact us to confirm your 10-speed rear derailleur.
Is it suitable for children?+
Often, yes: rotating the grip is simple to learn. These are standard 22.2 mm shifters rather than a youth-specific design, so check that the rider’s hand can hold and turn the grip comfortably. The 6/7- and 8-speed versions have the lightest rotational effort.
Is a Twist Shifter better than a Trigger Shifter?+
It depends on the application. A twist shifter is especially intuitive and affordable for city, comfort, and recreational bikes, and for many youth bikes; a trigger shifter is generally better for performance MTB and rapid, precise shifting.
