Dedicated 8- and 9-speed indexing, matched left and right controls, clear gear display
Separate internal indexing gives each drivetrain the correct cable movement, rather than relying on a compromised universal mechanism.
Available as 2×8, 3×8, 2×9, and 3×9 pairs for complete drivetrain builds, or as a right shifter alone for 1×8 and 1×9.
Positive mechanical detents provide clear, repeatable gear changes.
Easy-to-read front and rear gear displays make the system intuitive for commuters, recreational riders, and newer cyclists.
Each shifter has its own aluminum split clamp, separate from the brake lever: it fits without removing your grips, and you can set its position and angle independently of the brake lever.
The Ryden 8/9-Speed Shifter Set is a matched family of flat-bar mechanical trigger shifters for city, hybrid, trekking, recreational MTB, touring, fitness, and youth bicycles.
It isn’t one shifter that switches between 8 and 9 speeds. Every version is indexed for either an 8-speed or a 9-speed drivetrain, because 8- and 9-speed cassettes use different sprocket spacing and need different amounts of cable movement per shift.
Compared with a 7-speed drivetrain, eight and nine speeds give you finer rear gear spacing, broader cassette options, better cadence control, more refined shifting, and greater suitability for MTB and trekking.
The right-hand shifter controls the rear derailleur and has 8 or 9 indexed rear positions, depending on the version you choose. The left-hand shifter controls a compatible front derailleur and comes in 2× or 3× form.
Together they cover 1×8, 2×8, 3×8, 1×9, 2×9, and 3×9 drivetrains. The 3×9 pair is the standard version, matched to the Ryden 9-Speed Rear Derailleur and the Ryden Triple Front Derailleur.
Ryden ClickPath 8
The 8-speed right shifter uses Ryden ClickPath 8 indexing, with:
- •8 defined rear detents
- •Consistent cable movement
- •Positive tactile feedback
- •A low-friction cam
- •A durable steel ratchet
- •Simple service access
ClickPath 8 pairs directly with the Ryden 7/8-Speed Rear Derailleur on an 8-speed drivetrain.
Ryden ClickPath 9
The 9-speed right shifter uses Ryden ClickPath 9. Compared with ClickPath 8, it has:
- •Tighter indexing tolerances
- •More precise cable spool geometry
- •Slightly smaller cable movement between indexed positions
- •Better internal spring control
ClickPath 9 pairs directly with the Ryden 9-Speed Rear Derailleur.
Why each version is speed-specific
Some shifters are built with selectable indexing, but these aren’t: each right shifter is indexed for one speed. An 8-speed cassette and a 9-speed cassette use different sprocket spacing, so the shifter has to deliver a different amount of cable movement per shift. Separate 8-speed and 9-speed versions avoid any confusion about which one fits your drivetrain.
Don’t use an 8-speed indexed shifter with a 9-speed cassette, or a 9-speed shifter with an 8-speed cassette.
Two-lever operation
Each shifter has two levers, so you can shift both ways without letting go of the bar. On the right shifter:
- Main thumb lever
- The larger paddle shifts the chain toward larger rear sprockets, into easier gears. It has a broad, textured contact area and a rounded edge, works with light gloves, and turns on a reinforced steel pivot. One full stroke can move several easier gears at once.
- Release lever
- The secondary lever shifts one gear per click toward smaller rear sprockets, for predictable shifting into harder gears.
Ryden GearView indicators
- Right shifter
- Shows rear gears 1 to 8 on the 8-speed version, or 1 to 9 on the 9-speed version.
- Left shifter
- Shows low / high on the 2× version and 1 / 2 / 3 on the 3× version.
Rear gear 1 is the largest rear sprocket: see Setups & pairings for how the gears are numbered.
Ryden MicroIndex barrel adjuster
The right shifter has an integrated Ryden MicroIndex barrel adjuster for small cable-tension corrections without tools. The 9-speed version uses a slightly finer thread, because 9-speed indexing is more sensitive to cable tension.
Independent split clamp
Each shifter uses its own aluminum 22.2 mm split clamp, the same independent clamp design as Ryden’s other trigger shifters. Benefits:
- •Easy installation
- •No grip removal
- •Brake lever placement independent of the shifter
- •Adjustable shifter angle through clamp rotation

Cables included
Every shifter comes with one stainless inner shift cable. A pair includes a rear shift cable and a front shift cable; the 1×8 and 1×9 right-only versions include one cable.
Shift housing is included only in the 3×9 pair + housing kit version, which adds compression-resistant shift housing, ferrules, and end caps to the stainless inner cables. It’s a good choice when you’re replacing worn housing along with the shifters, or restoring an older bike.
Questions about this product (15)
A (Ryden team): No. It’s a family of separate 8-speed and 9-speed indexed versions: each right shifter is indexed for one speed.
Why can’t one indexed shifter work with both 8- and 9-speed?+
Because 8- and 9-speed cassettes use different sprocket spacing, so they need a different amount of cable movement per indexed shift.
What is the standard version?+
The 3×9 pair at $49.99, matched to the Ryden Triple Front Derailleur and the Ryden 9-Speed Rear Derailleur.
Which rear derailleur works with the 8-speed version?+
The Ryden 7/8-Speed Rear Derailleur.
Which rear derailleur works with the 9-speed version?+
The Ryden 9-Speed Rear Derailleur, or the Touring 9-speed version of the Ryden Long-Cage Touring Derailleur. That derailleur asks you to confirm your shifter before ordering: tell us you’re using the Ryden 9-speed trigger shifter and we’ll check it.
Which chain do I use for 8-speed?+
The Ryden 6/7/8-Speed Chain.
Which chain do I use for 9-speed?+
The Ryden 9-Speed Chain.
Can I buy a 1× version?+
Yes. Choose the 1×8 or 1×9 right-only version for just the right-hand shifter: they’re the same 8-speed and 9-speed right shifters sold on the Ryden Trigger Shifters page.
Can I get a 2× version?+
Yes: 2×8 and 2×9 pairs.
Can I use it with a triple crankset?+
Yes. Choose the 3×8 or 3×9 pair with a compatible triple front derailleur, such as the Ryden Triple Front Derailleur in its matching speed version.
Does it include cables?+
Yes. Each shifter comes with a stainless inner shift cable: two in a pair, one in the right-only versions.
Does it include housing?+
Only the 3×9 pair + housing kit version, which adds compression-resistant shift housing, ferrules, and end caps. The other versions include the inner cables only.
Does it show the selected gear?+
Yes. GearView indicators are standard on both shifters: 1 to 8 or 1 to 9 on the right, and low / high or 1 / 2 / 3 on the left.
Will the 9-speed shifter work with every third-party 9-speed derailleur?+
Not necessarily. The derailleur’s cable pull has to match the shifter’s indexing, so the same speed count isn’t enough. Contact us to check yours before ordering.
What handlebar size does it fit?+
Standard 22.2 mm flat-bar control areas.
