Fixie simplicity, adapted for real-world city riding

The Ryden Urban Fix takes the mechanical simplicity of a traditional fixie and adapts it for real-world city riding. Where the Fixie Pro is built around lightweight performance and the Single X targets mainstream single-speed commuters, the Urban Fix is the rugged everyday fixed-gear platform in the range.

Its double-butted 6061 aluminum frame balances weight and durability, while a chromoly steel fork provides strength and a slightly more forgiving ride than a basic straight-gauge steel fork.

At the rear is the defining component: a flip-flop hub. Install the wheel with the fixed cog driving the chain and the pedals remain mechanically connected to the rear wheel, so when the wheel turns the pedals turn and there is no conventional coasting. Reverse the wheel to the freewheel side and you can stop pedalling and coast like on any normal bicycle. It ships in freewheel mode by default, which is the better starting configuration for riders new to fixed gear.

A 46T chainring with a 17T cog and freewheel produces a 2.71:1 ratio, approximately 73 gear inches. That sits deliberately between the Single X (2.56) and the Fixie Pro (2.82), and is slightly easier than the Fixie Pro during frequent acceleration from intersections.

The Ryden Urban Durability Package covers the parts that matter on city streets: puncture-protected tires, double-wall rims, sealed-bearing hubs, a chromoly fork, stainless-steel spokes and replaceable rear dropout hardware for easier long-term servicing.

Flat handlebars give a familiar, controllable cockpit with good visibility in traffic. Both front and rear brakes are included as standard, whichever drivetrain configuration is in use. It is not intended for technical MTB trails, BMX riding, aggressive gravel, downhill riding, or competitive track racing.

A (Ryden team): Yes. Its flip-flop rear hub allows it to operate as a fixed-gear bicycle.

Asked by Ryden team, 0 helpful votes
Can I use it as a normal single-speed bike?+

Yes. Reverse the rear wheel to engage the freewheel side and you can coast normally.

Which mode does the bike arrive in?+

It ships in freewheel mode by default, so it behaves like a conventional bicycle out of the box. Experienced riders can switch it to fixed mode.

How many gears does it have?+

One gear at a time. There are no derailleurs or shifters.

What gearing does it use?+

The standard gearing is 46T front and 17T rear, giving a 2.71:1 ratio.

Does it have brakes?+

Yes. Front and rear brakes are installed as standard.

Can I remove the brakes?+

We do not recommend it. Braking requirements vary by jurisdiction, and conventional brakes provide important stopping capability even when the bike is ridden fixed. Drivetrain resistance is not a substitute for brakes.

Is Urban Fix suitable for someone new to fixed-gear riding?+

Yes, because it can first be ridden in freewheel mode. Riders interested in fixed gear should learn progressively in an appropriate low-risk environment before using fixed mode in traffic.

Why does it use a chromoly fork?+

Chromoly provides a good combination of durability, strength, ride quality and cost, which fits the Urban Fix’s workhorse positioning.

Can it handle rough city roads?+

Yes. The 32C puncture-protected tires, strong wheels and durable fork are chosen for normal urban road imperfections.

Can wider tires be installed?+

Maximum clearance is approximately 700 x 35C, subject to the specific rim and tire combination.

Can I install a rear rack?+

Yes. The frame includes dedicated rear rack mounts.

Can I install mudguards?+

Yes. Full-length compatible mudguards can be installed.

Is it suitable for very hilly cities?+

Not ideally. A single gear means the same ratio for climbing and descending. A geared Ryden urban or hybrid model is more appropriate for consistently steep terrain.

What warranty is included?+

A 5-year limited frame warranty, a 2-year limited warranty on the fork, wheels and brakes, and a 1-year limited warranty on other components.
