Built for the long haul

The Ryden Explorer is built for riders whose adventures do not end where the pavement does. Whether you are riding across mountain passes, exploring gravel backroads, racing endurance events, or setting off on multi-day bikepacking expeditions, the Explorer is designed to perform in every environment.

Its high-modulus carbon frame features endurance-focused geometry that provides excellent stability without sacrificing speed. The full carbon fork absorbs vibration from rough terrain while delivering responsive, precise steering.

The defining feature: unlike many gravel bikes built around a 1x drivetrain, the Explorer uses a Shimano GRX 820 2x12 setup with a 48/31T double crankset and a close-ratio 11-36T cassette. This gives you a wider overall gear range with closer spacing between gears, so you can hold an efficient cadence on fast pavement, spin up steep climbs, and keep pedalling comfortably when loaded for a long tour. It is the gearing choice for riders who spend real time on both road and gravel and want finer control over their cadence.

Hydraulic disc brakes provide powerful braking in any weather, while the lightweight carbon wheelset (with 35mm deep rims) and tubeless-ready 45mm tyres deliver grip, efficiency, and comfort across pavement, gravel, dirt roads, and forest tracks. A full carbon cockpit (carbon flared handlebar, carbon stem, and carbon seatpost) adds vibration damping for all-day comfort.

Multiple integrated mounting points throughout the frame and fork take racks, cargo cages, mudguards, extra bottle cages, and bikepacking bags without compromising performance.

Where it fits in the Ryden range: the Explorer is our 2x mechanical endurance gravel bike. It shares the same T800 carbon frame, carbon fork, and carbon wheels as our 1x Gravel Pro; the difference between those two is drivetrain philosophy, the Gravel Pro running a simpler, lighter 1x drivetrain tuned for gravel racing and simplicity, the Explorer a 2x drivetrain for a wider, closer-spaced gear range suited to endurance riding, road-heavy routes, and loaded touring, plus a full carbon cockpit. Above the Explorer sits our flagship Terra, which takes the same 2x gearing to Shimano GRX Di2 electronic shifting, a higher-grade T1000 frame, an integrated cockpit, and a lighter 8.1 kg build; the Explorer is the mechanical-shifting version at a lower price. Choose the Gravel Pro for a simple 1x race bike, the Explorer for a premium mechanical 2x endurance bike, or the Terra for electronic shifting and the lightest, most refined build. Below all three sit our alloy gravel bikes, the value Pathfinder, the all-round Adventure, and the heavy-touring Expedition, for accessible and touring gravel; for pure-pavement speed see our road bikes, for technical off-road trails see our mountain bikes, and for upright, flat-bar city and fitness riding see our hybrid and city bikes.

How is it different from the Ryden Gravel Pro?+

They share the same T800 carbon frame, carbon fork, and carbon wheels; the key difference is drivetrain philosophy. The Gravel Pro runs a simpler, lighter 1x drivetrain optimised for gravel racing and simplicity. The Explorer runs a Shimano GRX 2x12 drivetrain (a 48/31T double crankset with a close-ratio cassette) that gives a wider overall gear range with closer spacing between gears, better for endurance riding, road-heavy routes, and loaded touring. The Explorer also has a full carbon cockpit and is lighter (8.4 kg vs 8.9 kg). Choose the Gravel Pro for a simple, race-focused 1x bike; choose the Explorer for a 2x endurance machine. It is a choice of riding style, not a simple better/worse: they are built for different kinds of gravel riding.

How is it different from the Ryden Terra?+

They share the same 2x gearing layout (the same 48/31T crankset and 11-36T cassette), so the gear range is identical. The Terra, our flagship, steps up to Shimano GRX Di2 electronic shifting (vs the Explorer’s mechanical shifting), a higher-grade T1000 carbon frame (vs T800), an integrated carbon cockpit, and a lighter 8.1 kg build (vs 8.4 kg). Choose the Explorer for a premium mechanical 2x gravel bike at a lower price; choose the Terra if you want electronic shifting and the lightest, most refined build. Both ride the same terrain equally well: the difference is shifting technology, frame grade, and weight, not capability.

Can I use it as a road bike?+

Absolutely. The efficient geometry and 2x drivetrain make it very capable on pavement; the double chainring and close-ratio cassette are particularly well suited to holding an efficient cadence on fast road sections, while keeping strong off-road performance.

Is it suitable for bikepacking?+

Yes. The frame and fork include numerous mounting points for frame bags, racks, cargo cages, mudguards, and extra bottle cages, making it well suited to multi-day self-supported adventures, and the wide 2x gear range helps when the bike is heavily loaded. For heavily loaded trips, consider total system weight (rider plus cargo) alongside the 130 kg rider limit.

Can I install wider tyres?+

Yes. The frame accommodates tyres up to 700x50C, so you can tailor the bike for rougher gravel routes or extra comfort. It ships with 700x45C gravel tyres.

Why does it use a 2x drivetrain?+

A 2x drivetrain offers closer gear spacing and a wider overall gear range, making it an excellent choice for riders who regularly move between fast pavement, steep climbs, and heavily loaded bikepacking routes. If you prefer the simplicity and lower weight of a single chainring, our Gravel Pro is the 1x alternative: the two bikes are built around this exact choice.

Is the bike tubeless compatible?+

Yes. Both the carbon wheels and tyres are tubeless-ready, allowing lower tyre pressures for improved traction, comfort, and puncture resistance, valuable on loose gravel and long rides.

How much assembly is required?+

The bike arrives approximately 90% assembled. Final installation of the handlebars, front wheel, pedals, and seatpost is required, typically 30 to 60 minutes for someone comfortable with basic bike mechanics. Tools and instructions are included.

What warranty is included?+

Lifetime warranty on the carbon frame, 5-year warranty on the carbon fork, 2-year warranty on components (drivetrain, brakes), and a 2-year warranty on the carbon wheelset. Full terms in our Warranty Policy.

Why should I choose the Ryden Explorer?+

It is designed for riders who refuse to be limited by terrain or distance. Its carbon frame, Shimano GRX 820 2x12 groupset, hydraulic disc brakes, carbon wheelset, generous tyre clearance, and extensive cargo mounts deliver premium performance for endurance riding, gravel racing, commuting, and bikepacking: the long-distance endurance machine in our gravel range.
