Our locks and security range

What we supply.

Eight sub-categories covering the lock types and security accessories your customers genuinely buy. We’ve kept SKU breadth focused on the rated security categories that have insurance acceptance, plus the accessory categories that complete a bike security setup, rather than thin-stocking specialty locks with niche use cases.

U-locks (D-locks)

Rigid steel shackle locks · Sold Secure Gold or Diamond rated · ART 3–5 star where supplied · Shackle diameters 13–18mm · Standard and long-shackle variants

The volume security category for serious theft protection. Urban and high-theft-area retailers stock as primary security recommendation.

Folding locks

Plate locks folding to compact transport profile · Sold Secure Silver or Gold typical · Plate steel with riveted joints · Key or combination locking

Balance between security and portability. Popular with commuter customers who carry their lock daily and want lower bulk than a U-lock.

Chain locks

Hardened steel chain · Separate or integrated lock body · Sold Secure Gold or Diamond rated · ART 3–5 star where supplied · Chain link diameters 8–13mm

Highest flexibility for securing through wheels and frame to objects with awkward geometry. Heavier than U-locks for equivalent security but more versatile.

Cable locks

Wire cable with combination or key locking · Low security category

Suitable for low-theft environments, indoor storage, or as a secondary cable to a primary U-lock. Honestly: not appropriate primary security in high-theft urban environments, and we name this rather than overselling.

Anti-theft accessories

GPS trackers (bike-specific with smartphone app integration) · Motion-activated audible alarms · Security skewers (lock-and-key wheel/saddle anti-theft) · Integrated frame locks (Dutch-style back-wheel locks)

Supplementary security: a GPS tracker doesn’t prevent theft but improves recovery rates; an alarm deters opportunistic attempts. Pairs with primary locks, not replaces them.

Security skewers

Lock-and-key or hex-tool-required replacement for wheel and saddle quick-releases · Sold in pairs (front and rear) or singles

Quick-release skewers are easily removed by hand; security skewers slow component theft. Complete the security setup with a primary lock.

Integrated frame locks (Dutch-style)

Back-wheel-mounted permanent locks · Often paired with a removable chain that extends to secure the bike to a fixed object

The standard on Dutch-style city bikes. Supplied where the regional supply chain supports it.

Lock-specific mounting and accessories

Frame mounts for U-locks, folding locks, chain locks · Replacement keys and key cylinders (where supported) · Lock cable extensions · Combination dial replacements

The accessories that complete a lock’s working life. Available individually for service-stage repairs.

Why wholesale locks through us

A supplier that lets the security ratings do the talking.

Independent security ratings named per SKU

Every lock SKU names the security ratings the lock carries: Sold Secure level (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Diamond), ART rating (1–5 stars), VdS certification status. Where a lock is unrated, the SKU says so directly rather than implying a security level it doesn’t carry. Ratings are the buyer’s primary evaluation; we make them visible.

Wholesale pricing that protects shop margin

Direct-from-supplier wholesale pricing on a category where retail margin is structurally strong. Locks carry good margin because customers shop them on security rating and brand more than on price. Tier pricing improves as your volume grows.

Brand resale + your-brand private label on selected categories

Brand-name locks (where the brand permits wholesale resale) alongside our Ryden-branded lock range. Cable locks and standard U-locks are commercially viable for private label; high-security rated locks are typically brand-shopped because the rating credibility attaches to the lock brand itself.

Insurance-aware retailer support

Retailers serving customers who carry bicycle theft insurance often need to recommend locks meeting specific rating thresholds (typically Sold Secure Gold or ART 2-star for theft coverage to apply). Our quote stage confirms rating coverage per market so your customer recommendations align with their insurance requirements.

Build your shop’s own lock range

Branded locks, where the security rating credibility allows it.

Locks are a partial private-label category, and the honest answer about scope matters here more than on most accessory pages. Two commercial realities determine where private label works: customers buying high-security rated locks (Sold Secure Gold and Diamond, ART 4 and 5 star) trust the rating credibility that attaches to established brands; a private-label lock at this security tier struggles to carry the same rating credibility regardless of testing certification. Customers buying lower-rated locks (Sold Secure Bronze, cable locks, basic folding locks) shop on price and features more than rating credibility, which makes private label commercially viable.

We extend private label across cable locks, basic folding locks, standard U-locks (Sold Secure Silver and Bronze ratings), and lock accessories at [200 units per SKU on cable locks; 150 per SKU on basic folding and Silver/Bronze U-locks], with 3 weeks to first sample and 2–3 months from sample approval. High-security rated locks (Sold Secure Gold/Diamond, ART 3-star and above) and the more sophisticated anti-theft accessories (GPS trackers especially) are honestly outside private-label scope at launch; the rating credibility, engineering depth, and supply chain relationships required are beyond what private label at launch can support.

Specifications, security ratings, and the variables that matter

The specs that determine whether a lock actually secures a bike.

Locks are the cycling accessory category most subject to marketing claims that don’t survive testing. A lock body marketed as “hardened steel” can vary from genuine hardened tool steel to coated mild steel that yields to bolt cutters in seconds; a shackle diameter alone doesn’t tell a buyer how the lock performs under attack; a “high security” claim without independent rating is worth less than the catalog page it’s printed on. Wholesale buyers in this category learn quickly to defer to third-party ratings rather than marketing claims. The specs that matter:

Sold Secure rating (UK)

Sold Secure is the UK’s independent testing body for security products. Bicycle lock ratings progress from Bronze (resists low-skill attack tools for 1 minute), to Silver (3 minutes), to Gold (5 minutes), to Diamond (5 minutes against more sophisticated attack tools including hydraulic bolt cutters and angle grinders). UK insurance policies for higher-value bicycles often require Gold or Diamond rated locks for theft coverage to apply. Sold Secure ratings are the most widely recognized UK security standard and increasingly recognized across other English-speaking markets. We name Sold Secure rating per SKU.

ART rating (Netherlands)

ART (Approved Riding Tests Foundation) is the Dutch independent testing body. Bicycle lock ratings progress from 1 star (basic security) through 5 stars (maximum tested security). Dutch insurance policies frequently require ART 2-star or higher for theft coverage; ART 4 or 5 star indicates the highest security tier. ART is the most influential rating in the Netherlands and Northern Europe and increasingly recognized across Germany and Belgium. We name ART rating per SKU.

VdS certification (Germany)

VdS(Verband der Sachversicherer) is the German insurance industry’s independent testing body. VdS bicycle lock certifications are less commonly displayed than Sold Secure or ART but are recognized in German insurance markets, particularly for higher-value bicycles. We name VdS certification status where applicable.

Lock body material and construction

The marketing language (“hardened steel,” “tempered steel,” “boron steel”) often obscures the actual construction. The functional questions: is the steel genuinely hardened throughout (not just coated), is the lock body case-hardened with the right depth, and does the construction resist the specific attack vectors locks face (bolt cutters, hammers, freezing attacks, hydraulic spreaders, angle grinders). Third-party ratings test these attacks; we defer to the ratings rather than restating the marketing claims.

Shackle diameter and the relationship to security tier

U-lock and chain shackle diameter is one factor in lock security but not the only one. Common shackle diameters: 13mm (entry security tier), 14–15mm (mid-security tier, typically Sold Secure Silver/Gold), 16–18mm(high-security tier, typically Sold Secure Gold/Diamond and ART 3–5 star). A larger shackle resists bolt cutters longer but isn’t immune; the rating reflects the lock’s overall resistance to attack including bolt cutters, hammers, leverage attacks, and angle grinders.

Lock weight and the security-portability trade-off

Higher security typically means heavier locks. A Sold Secure Gold U-lock weighs roughly 1.5–2.5 kg; a Sold Secure Diamond U-lock might weigh 2.5–4 kg. Customers carrying locks daily make trade-offs between security and weight; the choice depends on their bike value, theft environment, and commute distance. We name weight per SKU because the security-weight trade-off is real and the customer chooses accordingly.

Key versus combination locking mechanisms

Key locks use a cylinder with a unique key code; the lock can’t be picked easily and the key is the only way in. Combination locksuse a multi-dial mechanism the customer sets to a memorable code; faster to use (no key to fumble), but vulnerable to combination-guessing attacks unless the lock uses anti-picking design. Higher security tier locks typically use key locking; lower security combination locks are commercially viable but shouldn’t be marketed as high-security solutions.

Key replacement and registration

Some lock systems offer key replacement services: if a customer loses their key, the brand can issue a replacement key based on a code engraved on the lock or recorded at point of sale. This is a service feature that distinguishes higher-end locks from commodity ones. We name key replacement availability per SKU.

Anti-theft technology accessories

GPS bicycle trackers are a category that pairs with locks rather than replaces them. The trackers attach to the bike (sometimes hidden inside the seatpost, sometimes inside a battery housing on e-bikes), connect to a smartphone app, and report location data. They’re insurance-supplementary rather than primary security; a tracker doesn’t prevent theft, but it improves theft recovery rates significantly. Alarm systems (motion-activated audible alarms that mount to the frame) are similarly supplementary. We name the technology features per SKU.

Security skewers, wheel and saddle anti-theft

Quick-release skewers (the standard on most bikes) are easily removed by hand, making wheels and saddles vulnerable to component theft. Security skewersreplace quick-release with a key-locked or hex-tool-required interface, making component removal much slower. They’re a category sub-product that pairs with locks: a Sold Secure Gold U-lock secures the frame, but if the wheels can be removed by hand, component theft is still easy. Security skewers complete the security setup.

Integrated frame locks (Dutch-style)

Some locks are designed to mount permanently to the bike frame and lock the rear wheel against the frame. These are the standard on Dutch-style city bikes, often combined with a removable chain that extends from the integrated lock to secure the bike to a fixed object. We supply integrated frame locks where the regional supply chain supports it.

What you won’t find in our locks range at launch

Smart locks with Bluetooth integration and app-based unlocking are outside scope at launch; the engineering and warranty depth required for connected locks is beyond what we can supply at launch volumes. Insurance products (theft insurance, bike registration services) are not products we supply; we recommend customers consult their insurance providers directly. Anti-theft body cameras and similar electronics that have niche use cases are outside scope.

Operational realities named up front

Locks ship dense and weight matters.

01

Locks ship dense but heavy, freight calculated on weight as much as volume

Locks ship dense but heavy relative to their volume. A box of locks weighs significantly more per box than equivalent volume in other accessory categories. A U-lock weighing 2.5 kg combined with the packaging means freight calculated on weight matters as much as freight calculated on volume. Per-SKU freight is moderate; small reorders move by parcel courier, larger orders by pallet. International freight from the origin port is quoted per shipment alongside your initial quote.

02

Packing matches retail tier; accessories ship to the use case

Locks ship in retail-ready packaging where they’re sold through to end customers (boxed with the lock, mounting bracket, two keys for key-lock systems, owner’s manual, and warranty card). Workshop-bulk packing is available for shops with display setups. Anti-theft accessories (GPS trackers, alarms) ship in retail packaging with installation instructions. Security skewers ship in pairs (front and rear) or as singles where the customer is replacing one wheel quick-release.

03

Installation is simple, mounting brackets are the practical service-stage item

Lock installation at the customer-bike level requires the supplied mounting bracket and standard tools. Most U-locks and folding locks come with a frame-mounted bracket that attaches to bottle cage bosses or with a strap-on mount for frames without bottle cage bosses. Chain locks can be carried in a bike bag or worn around the rider’s waist (heavier chain locks are typically carried this way). Security skewer installation requires the key or hex tool the skewer is keyed to; replacement parts and lost-key replacement vary by manufacturer and we name per-brand availability.

Common locks and security wholesale questions

What buyers actually ask.

What security ratings do your locks carry?

Sold Secure (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Diamond), ART (1–5 star), and VdS where applicable. Each lock SKU names the ratings it carries; unrated locks (typically cable locks) are named as such rather than implying a security level they don’t carry.

What Sold Secure rating do my customers’ insurance policies typically require?

Most UK insurance policies covering higher-value bicycles require Sold Secure Gold or Diamond rated locks for theft coverage to apply. Lower-value bicycles may be covered with Sold Secure Silver locks. Customers should verify their specific policy requirements with their insurer; the rating threshold isn’t universal across all policies.

What ART rating do Dutch and Northern European insurance policies typically require?

ART 2-star or higher is the typical insurance threshold. ART 4 or 5 star indicates the highest tested security and is often recommended for higher-value or e-bike security in high-theft urban areas.

What’s the difference between Sold Secure Gold and Diamond?

Both are tested against 5-minute attack durations, but Diamond is tested against more sophisticated attack tools including hydraulic bolt cutters and angle grinders. Diamond is the highest Sold Secure tier and is recommended for high-value bicycles in high-theft urban environments.

Should I stock cable locks as primary security?

No, and we’re honest about this. Cable locks are a low-security category appropriate for low-theft environments, indoor storage, or as secondary cables paired with a primary U-lock to secure wheels. Stocking cable locks as primary security in a high-theft urban environment will produce customer dissatisfaction when the lock is defeated.

What anti-theft accessories do you supply beyond locks?

GPS bike trackers (with smartphone app integration), motion-activated alarm systems that mount to the frame, security skewers (lock-and-key replacements for wheel and saddle quick-releases), and integrated frame locks for Dutch-style city bikes.

Are security skewers different from regular skewers?

Yes. Regular quick-release skewers are easily removed by hand, making wheels and saddles vulnerable to component theft. Security skewers require a key or hex tool to remove, making component removal much slower. They pair with primary locks to complete the security setup.

Do you supply key replacement services for your locks?

Some lock systems offer key replacement based on a code engraved on the lock or recorded at point of sale. Availability is brand-specific and named per SKU. Lost-key situations on systems without replacement service typically require lock replacement.

What’s the warranty on wholesale locks?

Locks typically carry manufacturing-defect coverage on the mechanism and body: [24 months from dispatch on the lock body and key mechanism]. Damage from attack or use beyond the lock’s design (e.g., attempting to lock around objects too large for the shackle) is not covered. Battery-powered anti-theft accessories (alarms, GPS trackers) carry separate warranty terms for the electronic components: [12 months on electronics, with the battery covered for the period specified by the device].

Can my shop stock GPS bike trackers and similar smart anti-theft devices?

Yes, where you have customers who want them. GPS trackers typically pair with smartphone apps and require customer setup; quote stage confirms the specific GPS systems we supply and the app/subscription requirements.

What’s the typical price range across your lock categories?

Cable locks at the lower end, then folding locks and basic U-locks in the mid range, then high-security rated U-locks and chain locks at the higher end. Anti-theft accessories vary widely depending on the technology integration. Confirmed per quote.

Can you supply a starter lock and security inventory for a new shop?

Yes. Quote stage confirms a starter inventory based on your shop’s target customer mix, theft environment, and insurance market context.

Do you offer Bluetooth or smart lock systems?

Not at launch. Smart locks with Bluetooth integration require engineering and warranty depth beyond what we can supply at launch volumes.

What’s the difference between this page and any visibility or reflective accessories you might supply?

This page covers locks and security accessories: products specifically for theft prevention. Visibility and reflective accessories are a separate accessory category and live in their own page in the wholesale catalog when built. Lights are the closest commuter-accessory adjacent and have their own dedicated page.
